Is this a good boat/price?

Hey folks, I have been looking to upgrade my bayliner 18 ft bowrider. I found a 1998 21 ft crownline 210 ccr cuddy cabin with a mercury I/O v-8 for $16,995.<br /><br /> It's offered by a marina, I saw the advert in the paper. I looked at the boat yesterday, but couldn't look too closely because it was raining and the boat was outside. It looks ok, a few scratches here and there. The previous owner removed the gps, fish/depthfinder, radio and antena. The boat has been outside in several long hard rainstorms, and there are holes in the hull where the transducers, antenas etc. were removed. Do you think that there will be negative consequences from this?<br /> It comes with a trailler, portapotty, small sink and small 1 burner stove, I'm assuming it's propane. No bimini or cover. What do you think? Is it a good deal? I'm relatively new to boats so I really don't know much about it. I would have it surveyed prior to purchase if you guys think it's a good deal.<br /> When I first talked to the salesman, I told him I was looking for a small cuddy in the 10 to 15k range. He said they don't sell many cuddys, maybe 1 a year. How far down should I talk him? It was a trade in, so you know he screwed the previous owner big time. I'm betting he gave him 10k or less for it.<br />TIA!

the whole idea of being stored UNCOVERED in the rain if that is what you are saying whould be a deal breaker for me it shows very poor care of the boat.<br /><br />i really cant believe someone would pull out the transducers and just leave holes in the boat and try to sell it that way <br /><br />it is so FUBAR to due that to a boat i have never stripped the hard installed stuff off any of my boats<br /><br />for 17,000 dollars you should be able to find boats that dont show such a gross lack of care<br /><br />tommays

Slow down Kal - Don't ****er on the price until you have a better idea of what you are looking at.<br /><br />Two suggestions - First make sure that you choose and pay for the surveyor not the selling dealer. Remember the goal of the salesman/dealer is to move money from your wallet to theirs. Next on the pricing spend some time at boattraderonline.com to get some sense on what the market might be for a similar boat.<br /><br />Have you given any thought about a trailer and what you might pull it with?

FWIW, Crownlines are pretty well built boats. I agree that the boat has to be fully investigated before determining it's value. Use the SAMS website to locate a local surveyor. It's money well spent!<br />The asking prices on sites like boattrader aren't a very realistic representation of what they'll sell for 'cause LOTS of people put up ads with inflated prices hoping to find an unwary buyer.

Yep, it was out in the rain, uncovered. The holes in the hull were from the fish/depth finder and the antena. I think the previous owner had a uhf radio or something. I was woried about the rain getting in the holes in the hull and maybe damaging the fiberglass. <br /> The more I think about it the more I want to forget about it. I think they could have at least tarped it. When I climbed up in it the carpet was completely soaked, and the cuddy door was open. The wind was blowing a little bit of rain into the cuddy. Another thing, the trailler had rust around all the bolts, (it was painted, not galvanized). The salesman told me the previous owner was from the bay area. When I asked if it had been in salt water he quickly replied "no, no, it was only in fresh water, the owner was not comfortable in the ocean." I don't believe that because there are plenty of shelterd bays to go to, there is also calm esturarine water to boat on. If I lived in the bay area I'd certainly have my little 18 foot bowrider in the bays and the delta system.<br /> I think I'll continue looking. Theres a boat show coming up, and I'll also continue looking on the net. <br />Thanks for the replies!

Here's my 2 cents worth. Never buy a boat like you described - unless you intend to buy a project for the winter. In my short experience with boat owners, I've come to realize that there are two types. Those who treat a boat as a disposable commodity, and those who treat a boat like a porcelain doll. When buying a used boat, buy from the latter. There are lots of them out there. And the boats they offer are little more expensive than the junk.<br /><br />My boat is a perfect example. I bought a 33 year old boat that is in near mint condition. You can see it at Norm's Winner, Cougar

I did some research and this is not a bad price, but make sure you pay to have the boat inspected for the big ticket items such as rot, compression, and outdrive. Also, never buy a used boat without taking it out on the water...that would be a huge mistake (starting with muffs is not the same). pull the plug and see how much water comes out after an hour on the water. If all tests pass, give it a shot and make an offer...at least you did your best to minimize your risks. One more piece of advice is to be patient and more boats will be available in the spring.<br /><br />Good Luck!

I got one call from the salesman, he was trying to defend his price, and didn't make any kind of counter offer. (I had offered him $13,000 out the door, contingent on survey and test drive.) I guess I won't be hearing from him again!<br /> I went to the boatshow today. seemed like mostly lots of overpriced boats. I did see the 10,000 Bayliners. <br /> I also saw some cool Chriscraft antiques. I talked to several dealers, and the only thing close was Bayliner. The sales guy told me he had a 19' 2005 cuddy for 19,000. I talked to another salesguy from the same dealer, and he said that cuddy was 16,500. I decided to check it out. It wasn't at the show it was at the dealers shop. I looked it over and it seemed ok, but again, this boat was sitting outside uncovered in the rain. I don't know, it must be a california thing. Anyway, I told the sales guy I'd offer him 15,000 out the door. He said make a deposit and he would submit the offer. Should I do it? I like it, it's not great, but it's decent. It has a small cuddy, portapotty, standard gauges, (no depth,fishfinder etc.) It comes on a galvanized trailer. It has a 3.0 litre Mercruiser I/O (I prefer an outboard) 138hp.<br /> I checked Nada, but I could only find a used value, not a new value. The value was 15,000 retail. I'm not sure if this was a 2005 or 2004, but is definetly a new boat. So whadaya think? Is it a good deal? It's a 192 CU.

Boat shopping... I'm jealous!<br />The Bayliner... I'm not sure what sort of performance you're looking for but a 3.0 liter won't be a rocket by any means.<br />Boat brokers or salesman are the ones that left those boats sit uncovered... the same thing happens here. There's a brokerage where I keep my boat and these guys are idiots. They regularly leave boats open regardless of the weather. There's been lots of them... actually all of the boats are neglected. Last fall they had an absolutely gorgeous 2003 26' Searay sitting on a beauty tri-axle trailer parked under a tree! The boat was filthy and full of wet leaves for weeks before they did anything about it. I don't understand how people could be so ignorant and lazy!<br />I got side-tracked <br />I like those Crownlines, they're nice boats.

Yeah, I like the crownline better than the bayliner, but the bayliner is ok. I don't ski or anything so the 3 litre is no big deal for me, but it will probably be a lot harder to sell than the crownline, if I get twofootitis down the road. I believe the crownline has a 350 in it.<br /> I'm still looking, but there's not a lot out there right now thats in my area.

i have a maxium 2000SC with a 3.0 its 19'-6" more or less with a small cuddy and the 3.0 just gets the job done.<br /><br />The biggest problem is getting on plane with a full load of people(6)to do it well you really need trim tabs or it will just sit there and wallow.<br /><br />now if its just 2 to 4 people it pops right up on plane<br /><br /> so it is something to think about depending on how you load up the boat.<br /><br />on the plus side it gets around 5 MPG at 24 to 26 MPH and will top out at about 41 MPH on a good day<br /><br />tommays

Most boats are sold with the electronics in place - because as you notice it is difficult to remove them cleanly. As has been discussed in other threads, while electronics don't really add much to the resale value of a boat, ripping them out certainly detracts....

Hi Kalian,<br /><br />I think that you should put some more thought into your purchase. You sound a bit apprehensive about the Bayliner and that could be a bad thing down the road. If the boat is just "Ok" or "Not great" right now, you may be putting out good money for something you will never be happy with. You are also looking at a boat that is already 1 year old being a 2005 model. If you decide you really don't like it, it will be tough to recoup the money you've spent. If you do wind up buying it, see if you can talk the dealer into some extras before you sign on the dotted line, like a depthfinder(Fishfinder), life jackets, bumpers, Etc. Good luck whichever way you go...

Thanks for the replys folks. I have been going back and forth between the 2, and I guess the + for the bayliner is new boat waranty. The + for the crownline is size and comfort, (21 feet vs 19.4 feet, the crownline also has a small sink and a 1 burner stove, which the bayliner doesn't come with.) and better build? Also the crownline has a 350, and the bayliner has a 3 litre. I probably would mostly be on the water with 2 adults and 3 young kids. Probably would never ski, but may pull a tube.<br /> I have only made verbal offers, and won't sign anything till I'm sure. But the dealers out here won't take it for a test drive unless you put down a deposit and written offer. So once I decide which one to go for I'll make a written offer contingent on both the test drive and the survey. If I like the testdrive I'll have the survey done, but if not I'll walk away.<br /> And I do think the crownline is a better deal, provided there hasn't been any damage from sitting out in the rain like that. And your right Ricdb1boat, I'm not exactly enthused about the bayliner. I'm not bayliner bashing, It's just that this one is basicaly a bare bones model with no options. The crownline beats the bayliner in just about every catagory except for being used instead of new.<br /> I'll let you know if I find anything else, or go with one of these boats.<br /><br />Edit: Forgot to ask, Tommays, was that with 6 adults or were there kids included? And that gas mileage sounds good. I wonder what kind of mileage the 21 ft crownline with a 350 gets?

Don't get too hung up about a boat being out in the rain. Boats like to get wet.
