I have a 24-foot pontoon and have been looking to upgrade the HP. The pontoon currently has a 50 hp two stroke engine, and is rated for up to a 90 hp.
A friend of mine just purchased a pontoon from a place nearby, and the guy was going to make him quite a deal (I think) on a 90 hp 2-stroke Merc for his boat. He had his heart set on a 4-stroke 115, and that's what he went with. However, my friend told me about the deal since I'm looking for a 90 hp, and wanted to ask what you guys think.
The motor is a 90 hp 2-stroke Mercury carb engine (not an Optimax), and is brand new. It's a 2008 model motor that he bought from a company that recently went out of business. It still has the full warranty intact (I have the s/n and will call Merc to verify). He told my friend he would sell it to him for his cost, which is supposedly $3850. My friend asked about what would be needed to swap it out with my 50 hp Merc, and there's some kind of harness (make sense?), and he would sell me the whole shooting match--engine, harness and prop for my setup for $4300.
Is this a good deal? Do I need this "harness"? Should I just take the motor minus the harness and prop for $3850?
Lastly, my 50 hp 2-stroke is a 2002, and is pretty quiet. Will the 90 hp be just as quiet or perhaps quieter since it is newer? Have they made further improvements on 2-strokes in those 6 years? Lastly, any idea what I can get for my 50 hp 2-stroke on eBay? I'm not a mechanic, but the thing runs great, I hit 21 mph (GPSed) on my 24-foot pontoon, and looks brand-new from the outside (and the inside is sparkling clean, too). I noticed lots of people on eBay list cylinder compression... how would I get that done? I assume that shows the condition of the engine?
Thanks for any input!!
