Hi, I'm looking at buying a 88-89 Suzuki DT140 outboard. (the guy wasn't sure on the year because the serial numbers overlapped the 2 yrs). Compression on it when checked cold was 140, 142, 140, 140. Inside of the outboard looks fairly clean. It fired right up when I went and looked at it. The guy is asking $800 for it...is that a good deal? Anything special (good or bad) that I should know about that particular brand/model outboard?

Thanx!

Sounds like a good deal, but the only way I'd buy it or any outboard motor is after about a one hour run down the river. Check cold start, idle, mid-range, wide open throttle, then you have a better idea of what you're buying. Good Luck!

Re: Is This a Good Outboard?

Hey I got another question on this outboard...I hope its ok to ask it on this thread. Dont like to start new threads all the time.

The outboard has a 25" shaft and we need a 20" shaft. What do we need to do to make this work? It has a 5" spacer that looks like it would come out but what about the shaft inside and stuff?? Would we need to get some other new inside parts to shorten it? Or is there a way to mount a 25" shaft motor on a boat that requires a 20" shaft and have it mounted at the correct height without messing with trying to shorten the shaft? Thanx for any help!

Btw, we did buy this outboard.
