I have a topic going on another subject forum, and this question has raised my curiousity. I always thought this was the same thing.. power trim / power tilt / trim/tilt... A member has raised my curiousity saying that indeed a good tilt will raise performance.. can someone explain this to me a little bit..

yah, i have a trim button and it makes my motor go up and down.. i trim it out to go faster. what will a good unit do for me?
A "good" unit will do the same thing. Yours is Trim & Tilt.

FYI...there are some units out there for just tilt....no trim.

What your doing when you trim out, basically is bringing the bow of the boat up to keep it from plowing. As more of the bow raises, the engine works less and the rpms' increase because there is less boat hull in the water.

How do you tell the difference in the units?

I can tell ya that, San Antone - I have power tilt but not trim - it will hold the motor up at idle and slow speeds for running stumpfields or shallow water, but throttle up and it pushes itself down. Most tilt/trim units have two short horizontal pistons that push out from the transom, then a longer vertical tilt piston that pushes it on up.
