1988 Mariner 60 ser# ob248347 still having overheat alarm only at WOT. if i were to unhook the sensor (which goes to the overheat alarm) and put in a temp guage and watch the temperature is that a safe alternative? since a temp guage is taking water temperature instead of metal temperature?? if so how hot is too hot to run that engine (water temperature) thank you

Find out why the alarm is sounding. Check the sensor. If it is good you have a genuine overheat.

Any cooling fault that is bad enough to set off the alarm will eventually allow one or more cylinders to overheat, seizing the piston, breaking rings, punching a hole in the crown, or such. Serious stuff to deal with.

hope it helps
