If you look at my thread you will see that the transom usually only rots to halfway. That is where it will crack and let water in, and you better have a good bilge pump. Once my wife saw the rotten transom on my glastron, she would not get back on it until it was fixed.

Re: Is this bad? (Transom)

It would seem that just about all of my transom except for a little south of the outdrive is in good shape. can't i just use something like git rot to harden it up?? its a shame to replace mostly good wood. There are no signs of stress on this thing.

Dont minimalize it, exterior signs can be very subtle. Frisco only found a little soft spot look at his searay tread to se where else it went.

Re: Is this bad? (Transom)

maybe he was lucky enough that the engine fell into the the boat and not the water :)

He didn't get that lucky, unfortunately. The transom broke away and the motor went into the water, dragging the boat down with it. Sinking her in a matter of a few minutes. The only thing that could be seen above water was the tip of the bow. This happened to a relative of mine. There were 2 adults and 3 young kids on board at the time. The kids all had life jackets on at the time and the adults were able to grab theirs as they went into the water. Noone was hurt, they all just got wet.
