Stay in touch as you're shopping. We can help you steer clear of obvious 'gotchas'. And, we love helping other people spend their money :)

I live in Babylon, btw. Looks like that Aquasport needs a little cosmetic TLC, but the asking price is reasonable if the hull and mechanicals are in good shape. Anything like that in good condition makes for a great day-tripper in the GSB. My first was a 21' Pro Line walkaround cuddy and it did fine in the rough stuff.

IMO, your budget justifies spending money on a survey and mechanical inspection when you find a boat you really like. It'll cost you a few hundred bucks, but can keep a first-timer from making a big mistake.

(AMC canvas in Lindenhurst is the place to go on LI for bimini tops and enclosures. Prices and workmanship are both excellent. You'll find nothing but positive reviews if you google them. I'm not affiliated in any way)

I think JoLin is spot on with his suggestions. He would know better than most seeing as he boats in the great south bay. I live in commack so I have mostly been out on the sound out of Kings Park but the few times I have been on the Great south bay it has been real choppy. My friends boat is, I believe, a 23 foot with a cuddy. That seemed to be the perfect size for me. Lots of free board and a big windsheild to keep us dry and it took the chop well for the most part. A single engine is absolutely fine in the bay. Just make sure you keep the engine and mechanicals in top running order. Repair or replace when suggested or at the first sign or wear. Although the bay isn't big water it still stinks to break down and have to wait for someone to come and help. Enjoy your search and good luck finding something for you and your familiy. Invest in a good gps. My buddies was great for keeping us out away from bars and shallow water. There was alot of sea weed when we went out and my buddy had to continually stop and put the boat in reverse to clear the prop. That doesn't sound like it would work well for a jet.
