Some of the old OMC coils did go bad simply from age, but this one isn't really noted for doing that. If the coating isn't cracked, it most likely is ok.

I talked to the seller (OMC Dave) and he says coils have been tested and are good...so I ordered one. The "peace of mind" of having a new coil installed is well worth the $65 bucks(shipping included) I paid.

Dave seems to be a real nice guy and responds to emails very quickly(I talked with him previously also).

He says he has TONS of "new" OMC parts for older motors( a lot of it isn't even listed on ebay), so I'll def keep him in mind if I ever need anything else.

Update:
New coil arrived today. Took off the old coil and found a huge crack that was hidden by the rubber strapping that was around the coil. God only know how long that crack has been there.

wow, nice nipple. :D Is this crack in your old coil? Yikes, no wonder you had troubles. Some people think that you can correct the issue by covering the crack and that does, work to well.

I have no idea if the crack developed recently or has been there for quite some time cause the rubber was hiding the crack.

I installed the new coil today and drop tested the motor on muffs. It seems that I'm getting a better 'stumble' when I pull the port side wires(one at a time), then I got with the old coil. (The single coil drives all 4 cylinders btw)

The starboard cylinders have always seemed to fire correctly, but the port side spark has been suspect.
We'll be hitting the lake on Wednesday, hopefully we'll notice some increased performance and faster starting after fishing.
