Is this engine oil injected?

My brother recently purchased a Stratos boat with a 115 hp Mercury outboard. He doesn't know what year it is but thinks it's a 1996. We are trying to find out the year of this engine and if it's oil injected. The serial # is g749 ***, and says on the side of the engine 115 power trim and turbo. Any help would be apreciated. The guy he got the boat from can no longer be reached. If it is oil injected where would the oil tank be on it?

Post the complete serial number, and you may find that someone can identify the year for you. Being at least a 1996 model, it should be oil injected. Typically you can see the oil reservoir under the cowling, with a cap at the top for filling. Serial number will help with that as well, as we can see exploded diagrams etc..

Re: Is this engine oil injected?

Serial number suggests it is bigger HP than you indicated. I cannot confirm the year (off my charts). I'd suggest it is newer than 1996.

Description based on serial number as follows (from the Mercury website):

MERCURY (3.0L DFI OPTIMAX OFFSHORE)
Serial Number: 0G749996 Model Number: 1200484UD

Could be 200 or 225 HP V6 based on that description.

It is fuel injected and oil injected. Typically you'll have a cowl mounted oil reservoir, and an auxilary oil make-up reservoir mounted in the boat.

Double check the HP & serial number.

Re: Is this engine oil injected?

Ok, after talking with my brother, I had him recheck the serial number and wouldn't you know it he had it wrong. The correct number is 6749996. I also had him check to see how many spark plugs it has and it has 6. He also says it has 3 carbs. He doesn't know anything about boat motors and I don't know anything about newer motors because all I've ever owned is the 1969 Merc 350 35 h.p. that I've had for the last 7 years. He lives quite a long way from me or I'd check it myself but I had him double check everything and the serial number is right.

I'm not gonna guess at it. That serial number 6749996, according to Mercury website is a Mercruiser Inboard/Outboard. :/

Inline 6's are not injected unless he has an AutoBlend tank somewhere in the back of the boat. Follow the fuel line. If it goes straight from tank to motor, no AutoBlend..

Re: Is this engine oil injected?

I'm not really sure about this but doesn't an inboard outboard have the motor in the boat with the lower unit out the back of the boat? This is just a regular outboard engine. I found the serial number on Mercury.com and it also says Mercruiser inline six. He pulled the cowl off and there is no oil tank on the engine. Just a starting rope in a bag. The boat itself is a Stratos and has a built in tank and on the gas cap it just says gas. It looks like it would say something about the mix if it wasn't oil injected.

Re: Is this engine oil injected?

He has to mix the oil into the fuel tank, as he adds the gas.
He needs to use TC-W3 rated outboard oil.
50:1

2.6 ounces of oil per gallon of gas.
16 ounces of oil per 6 gallons of gas.

I think your brother needs to follow roscoe's advice before he blows up the engine. Look on the outside, upper right side of the transom of the Stratos for the boat SR#, the last 2 numbers will give you the year and then if that is the orginal motor, you are very close to the right answer, put you in the ball park so to say.
