Is this exhaust housing bent?

Im not sure it this exhaust housing is bent, or if it was designed this way.

I was thinking it should be straight across and not bowed.

Anyone know?

Should I try and straighten it?

Without having one to compare it to, I would say no. I'm going by looking at the standing seal rib, and it's lower shelf, or stop. I can't think of anything that would bend it, as it is supported top, and bottom by a rubber seal that would also act as a cushion.

I would say no. It would break long before it would bend.

The one side looks like it is curled inward, and the sides ajacent to it also, to a lesser extent. The part of the block where it fits, are the mating surfaces the same xhape or are they straight? It will break if you try to straighten it.

Like stated above check what it mates to and you will soon know. Your first picture but taken at a 30 to 45 degree angle toward horizontal would help if at all possible.

What does the cavity look like where it fits into? That will tell the story for sure.

It is definitely bent. You may be able to straighten it with careful application of heat and pressure,

Also you need to look at the upper section of the exhaust to see if it was also damaged. It was bent by not being properly positioned on the upper section when the gearcase was replaced.

The motor will not operate properly like it is.

Whe I looked in the cavity, everything looks good. The area where it mates is definately straight across and not curved.

I took it over to the parts store and they did not have one in stock to compare, but they did bring up a good point while looking at it. The top and both sides are perfectly curved. They seemed to think that if it was unintentionally bent it wouldn't be so perfect.

I got new rubber and put it back together. Im going to crank it up tomorrow and see what happens.

Thats what I was thinking, seems to be very uniform for being bent. But it is unusual that the part it mates to is straight.

Especially unusual when you consider that all of the parts manuals show it as being straight.

If you look at the seal in the lower left corner of the first picture, you can see that there are no curves in it either.

I would say yes it's bent.

Now that it's back together, run it for awhile, then fog down the engine.Drop the lower unit.If there are any signs of fog oil or carbon or black on the outside of that part, replace it.The exhaust passes only thru that part, and if it leaks outside, you're losing power, and maybe running lean. Not good.

Well I don't know squat about outboards, but I worked as a field service machinist for years repairing just about every kind of industrial equiptment known to man including motors and compressors, turbines etc......And being that this is a straight male/female type connection I can't even imagine how it could get bent like that unless it was intentionally done. Are you sure the part is the right one ?

It seems as though it was intentionally bent in on all sides to make it small enough to fit into the mating socket, as when you bend something you decrease the straight line distance corner to corner. Much like crimping a sheet metal duct on the end to fit up to the female hole.

As Ezeke states..... That component is bent. I've handled hundreds of them and I've never seen one distored as that one is. I'd be interested in how that took place.Don't play with it as you'll never get it back to its original condition. Replace it.

Somehow I don't think the mystery of how it got bent will ever be solved. I just bought the unit and this is the first time I have taken it apart.

As soon as it gets back to being warm in FL, I will get it cranked up and see what happens.

Hopefully it will work fine..... Im not too keen on dropping $93 for this part, Althought I found one on Ebay but it was for 20".. .doh!

When I was replacing my lower unit, I thought I had lost my exaust housing and went to a local marine salvage yard and saw 8-10 of these housings from failed 25" models before locating one for my 20". So, try the bone yard!

Re: Is this exhaust housing bent?

My guess on the bending is it got installed w/o a gasket or a bad one,was used in the ocean, and salt got to it.Then got installed on your motor.

Still saying ..... if it's not leaking externally it's not a problem.

Survey says........ It was bent.

I tracked down a replacement.

Here is the old one next to the new one.
