I had oil leaking from he crank of my 5hp 4 stroke evinrude. I took off the power head thinking it was a bad head gasket. The metal gasket is warped and there what looks like a thin black gasket that is destroyed. Is that part of the gasket or is it the paste that they use in the factory?
So do you guys think I should buy an new gasket?

I would say you definately need to buy a new one... That one is toast, and make sure you clean the surfaces perfectly too before reinstalling the new gasket. Then torque the bolts to the proper ft/lbs and pattern...

Great! I was hoping the gasket was the problem because if not, then I would have to go back to the drawing board, and I wasted a lot of time.
Thanks

If you look closely at it, you can see where it's blown. Defineatly replace it.
