is this motor a good deal?

I currently have a 94 evinrude 15hp short shaft manual start. I use it on a 16ft aluminum boat with 3-4 adults in it.

A local marina has a95 mercury 25hp short shaft missing the cowl for $750. How does the mercury compare to the evinrude? Is the merc at $750 a good price? Thanks!

i suggest you find out what it will cost to replace the cowl, before considering anything. a complete motor $750 is a good price.

I believe I can get a used cowl for under $100.

Any input on the quality of power from the merc?

A friend of mine has a 15hp merc (late 90's) on a 14 ft aluminum boat. My 15hp evinrude will move a larger boat faster than his merc. Is this common?

The power of any two 25HP motors will be similar at WOT, since that is how they are rated (i.e 25HP @ 4500RPM). The power available at partial throttle can differ between the two motors, if they are different in displacement, number of cylinders, scavanging method, and some other factors. For example, if both motors are cross flow, two cylinder, 2 cycle motors with about the same displacement, you may expect very close performance at all throttle speeds, with the proper props. Loop charge motors sometimes have better low end torque. Larger displacement motors usually have better low end torque.
