50 hp evinrude cranks up great and idles all day if lower unit is out of the water (earmuffs). Also idles strong when trimmed up, barely in the water. If the motor is trimmed all the way down it dies quickly when start in neutral. I have to disengage and give some gas before cranking or trim the motor up so the prop is barely in the water. If idling as i trim down i hear it bogging down and it dies. I recently discovered my lower unit is bad, could the two be related somehow?

needs a tune up....when it is under water, there is backpressure on the exhuast and it changes the idle....

that is why a motor isnt really tuned and adjusted fully untill it is in water and in gear... they make a device that goes on in place of a prop for tuning in the tank at shops..

ps the mechanic i know who helps me says those 50 hp are very hard to tune up, they always sound bad....

good luck
