Is this normal?

I changed the water pump impeller on the old 1973 9.5 Johnson. I hung it in a bucket of water and started it up. Plenty of water came out the water discharge hole but I noticed it was coming out from the area at the bottom of the tape arrow in the picture. This is from what I would call the main upper jacket for lack of a better term. Just wondered if this was normal? I suppose if the motor leg was down in the water far enough I probably would have never saw this water running out on both sides of the leg in this area. Thanks

Thanks it's funny what I don't notice until I start worrying about whether I've done it right or not. I thought I would post a picture of the old motor hanging on the motor stand I built for it about 40 years ago.
