In game 3 of the NBA champ series "Shaq" O'Neal (Miami Heat) gave Jerry Stackhouse (Dallas Mavericks) an elbow to the face while he was shooting and broke his nose. The Stack played on after treatment and a couple of foul shots but was greatly reduced in effectiveness. The Heat won the game by 2 points to cut the Mavericks lead to 2-1.

In game 4 Stackhouse fouled Shack deliberately to stop a layup. No harm. O'Neal played on after a couple of foul shots. The Heat won the game by a large margin.

Today, the NBA fined Stackhouse and suspended him from the critical game 5, potentailly crippling the Mavericks and almost handing a 3 to 2 advantage to Miami.

Is there some skullduggery afoot here, or am I just biased?

Sounds crooked, looks bad, and smells bad, so I guess everything is normal :D Its only Miami and Dallas so they didn't think anyone was watching :D sorry, but a non-event here.

Wish I could give some kind of "good" answer JB. Sounds like something "amiss". But just like anything involving large dollar bills, anything can and usually does happen.

Not a large fan of BBall....but really sounds like it stinks to me.

I watched and thought the ref's handled it right! The league have mad fools of themselves! The foul was intentional, was hard (has to be to stop Shaq); but, not worth a suspension!!

I'm with JB - wrong call from the top!!! Listen to Shaq, said his daughters tackle him harder when he gets home! Least he's a big boy and taking the hit well.

The league is going overboard with suspensions.

Call an intentional foul; fine him if you must, but unless there is a clear intent to injure someone, or a punch is thrown, let them play the game.

It is entertainment, after all, and fans don't pay to see players sitting in the stands in street clothes.

Re: Is this okay? I think it stinks.

The foul committed by Shaoq was inadvertent. The play was made toward the ball to prevent it from going into the basket. In the process, a foul was committed. Such fouls are common in the game of basketball. The key word here is "inadvertent". On the other hand, the foul received by Shaq was a "fragrant one" foul which is "unnecessary" by league rule. The play wasn't toward the ball. Jerry deliberatively fouled Shaq. Such a foul has the potential to end a player career. Had Shaq been seriously injured, it would have been a "fragrant two" foul. Which would be an automatic ejection and suspension.

The call and suspension are well within the league rules.

I see several flagrant (deliberate and unnecessary) fouls against the player rather than the ball in every game.

Your explanation seems quite logical, GQ, but it does not convince me.

I see a deliberate attempt to hand an advantage to Miami in a close league championship series.

GQ; watch the game closely! The NBA has lots of grabbing/pushing on a player driving to the basket. By your def (I agree with) they should be called a "fragrant" or "unnecessary" as there is no attempt to get the ball. They let them go as they do other violations in the name of a game that is really entertainment. BTW just to fortify my case I've played lots of BB - best coach I ever had was **** Motta - could tell some good stories about time spent with him, great coach, One time I made a comment; his return remark make me wish I could have crawled under the door instead of having having to open it and walk though with ~ 80 people watching.

The changes to allow so much to go on to provide a entertainment venue is why I like to watch collage ball and only watch NBA during playoffs.

Home office should have stayed out of this one; gives a foul smell to the playoffs.

I feel they should only be considered "fragrant" if the opposers arm pit is involved. :) Otherwise suspension from the rest of the series is an unduly harsh ruling IMO.Let em play.

It all comes down to the $$$.

Now that people can gamble online the $$$ that can be won on this stuff has gone up considerably over the past couple years. And I suspect that has to do with the sometimes very obvious fixing of playoff/tourney games in basketball I've witnessed in the last couple years. It's all about $$$.

JB, this is as old as sport. Every stinking sport you can name has been twisted by some perverse, corrupt azzclown with lots of money, and it's up to the fans to show their indignation of that. NASCAR has it's "young guns", who drive each other up into the "SAFR barrier" every Sunday. The fans go crazy on both ends of the spectrum --- and tickets are sold. Don't get me wrong. I picked on NASCAR because it is my sport of choice. I rarely miss a televised NEXTEL race, and only a few Busch ones. I did so to make the point that no sport is immune.Baseball has a checkered past besides ("say it ain't so, Joe!").Sure, basketball and golf admittedly, are a couple of the more wholesome venues. but where there is a buck, there also is a schmuck to ruin everyone's day.
Just know you're not the only one who saw it, and the appropiate hornet's nests have been stirred. :)

Don't agree with the admin's call, official's call was correct. Unfortunately, in any sport, it is not the person who throws the first punch, or commits the first foul that gets hammered with the penalty, it is the one that retaliates - even if the retaliation was incidental. Don't agree with the call, but is what I would expect from pro sports.

Originally posted by JB:
[QB] I see several flagrant (deliberate and unnecessary) fouls against the player rather than the ball in every game.

Yup, I agree a lot of intentional fouls go unnoticed. But mainly due to the fact that they occur away from the ball or blocked from view. Remember the one when Terry sucker punch Finely in the groin? The refs. were unaware of the incident until Finely made numerous complaints and the tape was reviewed. I don't think the refs. were bias in the incident you mentioned above. Just a case of "sometime you get the bear; sometime the bear gets you".
