Hello all,
A few days ago I created a thread about a 1998 70hp that was for sale and I was planning on going to look at. Anyway, I went to go see it yesterday and eveything seemed to check out until I pulled off the hood to do a compression test. The thing is is that the engine had the "big red plug" design for the engine harness which was the the way in which things were set up pre 96'. At that point, I figured that the man problably was mistaken when he said that it was a 98, and I went to check the transom bracket for the model number plate. Interestingly enough, the engine model was E70TLECB or in other words a black 1998 engine. I confronted the guy selling it about the issue and he said that he had the engine converted over to that style to fit the old controls on his boat. This seemed a bit strange to me because I would think that you would change the harness coming from the controls before you switched out the harness within the engine ..... however I might be wrong. Anyway, I did a little more investigating with the guy about the engine and found out that he replaced the T/T stepup, complete with the bracket, last year. So, I was wondering if it were possible that he purchased a newer bracket, with a model number plate on it from a 98 engine, and then put it on his older engine trying to pawn off the entire setup as a 98. Any thoughts?

One thing to note is that I couldnt locate a model number on the engine block itself, however the engine had a T/T button on the side of it which I think may be a feature of the newer engines. Sorry for the long post, I'm just trying to prevent getting ripped off. Good Boating!!

I'd think he used the brackets and possibly the trim from a 98. There are adaptors to go from a 95 & older boat harness to a 96 & newer motor harness. In reality there wasn't much performance of function difference, if any.

It is a 56 cid motor, right? Look for a single plate on the exhaust area and a head with only the t-stat covers. If it has 3 plates on the exhaust and a water jacket plate as well as the t-stat cover on the head, the motor is much older.

Re: Is this possible .... 70hp

Hey thanks for the quick reply. I believe the engine is a 56 cid (its a 3cly two stroke). Unfortunately I can't really remember if the engine had the plates that you describe ......... Im not sure if I would be able to recognize them even if I was staring right at the thing. If I do get a chance to go over and check out the engine again would you have any advice on what to look at .... what side of the engine and what they look like.

Also, does the fact that it has the auxilary T/T built into the side of the engine give away any information. Did they start including that feature in one year over another? Thanks again for the help it is much appreciated

What do you mean by "auxilary T/T built into the side of the engine"? The trim & tilt is between the brackets, not on the side of the motor. Unless the motor is way older.

He means the button on the side of the belly pan. I don't know what year that came in - I'd have to look through the parts books...

Re: Is this possible .... 70hp

Hey guys... sorry I couldnt get back to you earlier. The button I am talking about is on the rim of where the cowling attaches to the motor (I guess its called the belly pan). I have attached a picture with a red arrow pointing directly at the switch I am talking about. From what I could tell it looked like it was a factory part but I suppose that it could have been installed aftermarket. Let me know what you guys think and thank you for the help.

The auxilliary switch started showing up on the 70HP motors with PT&T in 1989.
