I'm looking at a used fishing boat package-2002 Tracker boat and 40 hp 2 stroke Merc(Tracker decal)
Is this a mercury engine? How well would thissize engine idle down and perform for trolling ?

Thanks

Assuming it's also a 2002, then it should be a Merc. In the 80's Tracker used Johnson motors. Force motors were generally used in the 90s, but their run ended with the 1999 model year. It should say "Tracker by Mercury" on the hood.

Generally speaking, 2-strokes don't like to troll. They run rich and rough, and carbon-up. You might consider a kicker motor, but I kinda doubt your boat is really big enough to handle the extra weight if there's even room for it.

Unless you have a 4-stroke 40Hp. I'd be suprised of that, though. Tracker uses the cheapest motor available in a particular horsepower. At least that's been their track record.

If your motor,or motor to be,is newer than 1997,it should have a decal on the motor leg stating what it is.By motor leg I mean the housing between the powerhead and lower unit.Decal could be port or starboard, and should include year as well as make.
DHP

Get the serial number off the transom bracket. That will tell the story...

Hi Beats
I don't know what year youe motor is. As the others suggested get the mod.#. Now this business of two stroke motors not whating to idle is just plain hog wash. I hear and read all the time about this. Some guys claim they have to cut the oil ratio while others say they can only use special oil blessed by the pope. Fisherman will use any excuse for a poorly running mal adjusted motor. If a motor doesn,t idle properly it is because there is something wrong with. The 40hp motor you are interested in no matter what brand it turns out to be should troll at idle all day long for several weeks at least. Keep in mind that all engines will require service sooner or later. My outboards will normaly go a complete summer season and more. Also keep in mind we are talking fishing boats we're not trying to fish from a hydoplane.

Alcan is dead on. I troll all the time with my 91' 70 HP Rude and it does just fine. Never loads up and takes right off when I'm done trolling. Maybe just lucky, maybe good running Motor...
