sounds a little risky to me...<br /><br />1) The price of a proper test wheel will be less than almost any damage if the boats comes loose from the trailer.<br /><br />2) safety issue: see general safety rules for working on boats.
There's nothing wrong with running 5000 rpms on the trailer at the ramp. I know a boat mech that has been doing this for at least 25 yrs without a problem at his waterfront shop...to set timing. He says its faster and saves the customer labor costs.
I have no problem with anyone doing that if it is a concrete ramp. If not, a 140 running at 5,000 rpm can dig a hell of a hole - - not nice to the other boaters who want to use that ramp.
I have done this several times on a concrete ramp to prevent damage to the ramp. Haven't had one to launch over the bow winch yet.<br />Its kinda hard to adjust a merc. carb with just your self in it going out across the water so I opt for the ramp sitting on the trailer.<br />Most of the shops around here have a concrete well they back into to test the motor.
