At 35mph getting 1.75mpg with 20 gallons of gas (40 bucks) in the tank you get 1 hour of running time?

Yep...

20 gallons x 1.75 mpg = 35 miles.

35 miles @ 35 mph = 1 hour of run time.

1.75 mpg isn't very much bang for your buck!!!

Sean

I cruise about 3000rpm getting 20-22 knots.. Depending on the load and conditions, she's drinking right about 2 mpg average... Usual 30 nautical mile round trip uses 15 gallons, give or take...

Re: Is this right??

Wow !! I thought so. I was wondering why my gas gage is near empty when ever I get back. Hang out/ fishing hole is 20mins from ramp. Doesn't leave much time for cruising after dumping $40.00 bucks into it. I am kind of glad winter is coming. Maybe I can save some money. If gas prices are like this next summer I may have to get oars and start bulking up the kids.
P.S./ J.B I posted this in dockside chat because it was math question not a boat question . Either way I got my answer. Thanks

Re: Is this right??

20 gallons per hour sound a bit much to that boat. I ran twin v8 in a 11,000 boat cruised at 24knts and used 30 gallons per hour. You should be in the 10 to 15 gallons per hour range.

Re: Is this right??

I'm wondering what rate you're cruising at when you're going 35 mph - is this wide open, 3/4, 2/3?

20 gph seems a little steep to me, but I've never had a rig exactly like yours. On the other hand, I had a 19 foot aluminum Jet Craft river boat (very solid, welded hull) with a 350 GM engine and a jet drive and I burned less than 10 gal per hour at cruising (around 30-35 mph, depending up or down stream, around 3/4 throttle). I would expect a prop outdrive to be more efficient.

Re: Is this right??

You probably will not like this answer, but there might be a more efficient but slower cruise speed than 35 mph. Speed costs money in a boat.

Re: Is this right??

I used 35mph because it was easier to figure out the math question. I actually cruise around 3200 to 3400rpm’s (around 45mph). I have lots to go after that WOT is 4700rpms. The point is even at 3 miles per gallon you are still burning a lot of gas to not to go that far. I didn't realize when I rebuilt the boat that the most expensive part would be putting gas in it. I have a sixty gallon tank. I don't think it ever saw 3/4 of a tank all summer. I knew that all boats were gas hogs . I used to make fun of my brother when he had to fill up his cabin cruiser before a weekend of fishing. Just a year or two ago me saying “ha ha ha over a hundred bucks for a weekend” now over a good weekend I can spend 80 bucks just riding around. Lots of money for this sub-contractor in a down economy.

Re: Is this right??

I installed a navman fuel monitor. It uses a sensor with an infared light and wheel that spins as the fuel flows through the line. It can be calibrated to be reasonably accurate. I get about 2.27 mpg at 35 mph. I burn more fuel at 25 mph on the same trip distance than I do at 35 mph. Slower is not always more efficient as your run time is longer at slower cruise speeds.

What did the navman cost you?

Re: Is this right??

I don't have too much experience with mine yet but I seem to be using about 7gph with a 4.3 v6 OMC. When I start pulling tubers etc I expect that to drop some.
