86/87 470 power plant s/n: A614866 Alpha 1 outdrive s/n OA662752. Just replaced the impeller and housing.
Have never seen anything like this in the posts that I have read, or in service manual 6. Am I missing something?
This view is looking at the bottom of the upper unit, where the lower unit mates to it.
Also, how much gear oil should it take to re-fill?

Re: is this shiift coupler in the correct position?

hard to tell if the coupler is in the right position or not from the pic. the side with the shoe on it is easier to tell. not really much to the coupler in the upper really. the shift shaft, the washer and cotter pin. it just spins free when in the condition of the pic. pretty loosely too.
only thing i see odd about the pic is the black gear lub running out of it. gear lub that i've seen is either brown/tan, like engine oil (but it's gear lub). or blue/green, like merc. hp gear lub. as for quantity of gear lub. you'll need two qt. bottles of whatever yer using to fill it up. it's a little more than a qt.

No way to tell from that side. The "toe" of the shoe should face straight forward. Before you mate the upper and lower, make sure that the lower shift shaft is turned all the way clockwise (forward), then turn the prop counterclockwise till it locks, and bungee it in place.

Re: is this shiift coupler in the correct position?

I did this task without removing the entire drive unit from the transom due to the fact I just recently had a service performed. That's why I don't see the foot you are talking about.
After my last outing in mid June I was checking the temp sensor vs temp read on a thermocouple I had placed in the coolant tank. Unknown to me , my wife thought I had left the hose running and turned it off!! This is why I ate up an impeller ( she owes me one now!!).
I have re-attached the lower unit to the upper unit and before I put power to the outdrive (engine running) I want to make sure it is operating correctly (I don't want to break any drive shafts or anything like that). So I searched the threads here to find out which way the prop turns both in fwd and in rev. I read that standing behind the boat and looking at the back of the boat, in fwd gear the prop should turn clockwise.

The word "turn" has me confused in that the poster did not say if turn was with the engine running and in forward gear and the prop was actually rotating that direction, or if the engine is not running and the prop when hand rotated clockwise ratchets; but locks when trying to turn the prop CCW.

Standing behind prop these are what my setup is doing
In neutral, my prop can free turn (no ratcheting) both directions
In Fwd, ratchets when turning prop cw, locks when turned ccw
In Rev, ratchets when turning ccw, locks when turned cw.

I have not started the engine and put the drive in gear yet, only moved the control box fwd, rev and thurned prop by hand.
Unfortunately for me, I jumped the gun and already replaced the gear lube, which means if I have to do this over again I will have to do a drain and re-fill.

Re: is this shiift coupler in the correct position?

okay, thanks a lot...today I took the end cover off the seawater inlet to the heat exchanger so I could remove all the broken impeller pieces...good thing I did, as it was almost completely plugged. Tomorrow I'll fire her up and move on from there.
Thanks again
