I bought sparkplugs for my Evinrude 40Hp Big Twin 1963 model at NAPA. They gave me RJ8C plugs. I found some posts that recomend RJ7C. I do not want to damage this old motor.

Re: Is this sparkplug to hot

The R series plugs normally won't work with the old magnetos. The small amount of resistance they provide is simply too much for them, and can cause a mid-range misfire.
The correct plugs are Champion J4C gapped at .030". This is a direct replacement for original plug, the J4J. RJ8C is far too hot for that engine and will lead to sever engine damage. If you want to use a hotter plug due to altitude or that you do a lot of low-speed running, the J6C may be used.
Hope this helps!
