Is this spot thick enough for a ski ring?

I have a 1996 Godfrey Hurricane Fun Deck 24'. When I bought it, I noticed it had two holes at the back where a cleat or ski ring used to be installed. See picture:

So I went inside the engine compartment and took these two pictures:

Do you see where someone cut out an 8" strip of that plywood? Why did they do that? My hatch hinges are actually screwed into that strip of wood (1 on each side). I'm not sure if that's strong enough to put a ski ring on to pull an adult wake boarder or a 2 man tube. I have a sheet of 1/2" marine plywood lying around (from a friends shop), and I'm thinking I might put some PL adhesive on it to fill the 8" gap in wood from the pictures. Then I would drill from the existing holes through the new wood, and install a 12" long by 5" wide stainless steel backing plate. I'm still not sure if I would be ripping the fiberglass out.

What do you guys think? I guess I could use a bridle from the two lifting rings that you see in the first picture, but I'd rather not.

My ski ring looks like this:

I would back it with a metal Steel/Aluminum plate instead of wood.

It should be fine.
A Skier/Boarder will not pull any harder than they can hold onto the rope. ~100#?
A tube will be quite a bit more if/when it submarines at speed! >500#??

The factory mounted mine a lot higher in the fiberglass of the Cap.
About where your "Hurricane" lettering is.
It pulls tubes just fine. When one submarines it will slow the boat so much that it drops off plane.

Yours is in the Cap/Hull overlap. Plenty strong!

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... Donno why that got cut out,... Too bad it did, but it's fixable...

Is yer 12" x 5" ssteel plate gonna also tie-into/ firmly attach to the Transom wood, Just below yer holes....

I guess it is, 'cause the holes are in the top castin' only,... acutally above the joint I believe,..??
The strength of the hull is in it's transom,... it's right there, Use it....

I'd go with some sorta mechanical bond, so's it could be taken apart some day, if necessary,...
Maybe the way ya bend yer plate,..?? straps, 'n screws into the transom wood, on the back of the tow hook,..??

In my opinion, if you overlap the seams, (where the new piece of wood meets the old), with your metal backing plate, you should be fine. Having said that, do keep in mind earlier post about the pull of a tube submarining.

I'm not sure how I would be able to tie it into the transom. Most of the material right below those holes isn't thicker than 1/4" either. If you look at that first picture you'd have to go pretty far down to get to transom material. I think it would have to self support off that fiberglass.. thoughts?

Ayuh,.... It appears that if the tow hook studs extend through yer 1/2" plywood, they're gonna over hang the transom wood,...

Correct,..??

If so, A flat plate with the right holes would go onto the tow hook studs, 'n be nutted on,...
The plate extendin' down, however far, would be screwed to the face of the transom wood....
It might need alittle bendin', up by the tow studs...

Or,... I'm missin' something in yer pictures...
I can't see it interferein' with the cover...

The spot where the plywood would go, is only 5 inches wide or so. I couldn't get it to the transom wood I do not think. I'll try to get a better picture tomorrow to show you.

It seems like you might be over thinking the whole project. You have 2 ski hooks already mounted in the transom, one next to the transducer cable and one next to the speedometer cable. Why not just use those?

Well, I think you're kinda right to a degree. I have 2 holes on the aft of my boat. I'm either going to put a cleat there or a ski ring. I could use a bridle and float to pull tube/ski but I have always heard that it's better to have the line pull from above the water line, not below like a bridle would do for me. This makes it easier to ski/wakeboard, and tube swivels better (or so I hear).

I'm still planning on getting pictures later today that show the inside better.

Ok here is the latest update:

As you can see from the pictures that's a little 1/2" piece of plywood that the steering arms are screwed into (it appears). This black hose at the top if the "gap" if you will. The two holes are above the hose, and the transom wood is below the hose. The 2nd picture illustrates this better.

What's behind this 1/2" sheet of plywood? Is that my transom?
