Hey guys, just replaced my rear main seal and oil pan gasket on the 5.0L.

Started her up outside on the ground. Fired right up, no leaks, was happy.

Put the motor back in boat, let the boat sit a couple days outside..... and then it poured rain outside and I was at work.:facepalm::facepalm: The boat was not covered, nor was the engine covered.

So I try to start it the following day after the heavy rain ( i mean HEAVY), and the starter sounds like a blender with bolts in it.

I start pulling plugs, and water comes out of 2 of them. One had A LOT of water in it (probably 1/2 to 3/4 quart), the other one less. While plugs were out, tested compression. All cylinders 175-195 psi. I DID re-use the riser elbow gaskets as they were only 3 months old. (not sure if they're reusable)

My question(s): Is it possible that rain somehow got thru the carburetor into the cylinders ? What other simple tests are there to determine how water got in there ? If the engine was not run with water in it (it couldn't even crank), should it be okay internally ?:facepalm::facepalm:

Yes, I had the same problem a couple of years ago, however my engine cover was on. The design of my boat unfortunately allows rain water to drip onto the shroud on top of the carb. After a couple of days of rain I went out to use the boat and soon realized that the engine had water in it. I removed the shroud, pulled off the spark arrester and water poured out of there. I pulled all the plugs, cranked the engine to get rid of water, and also while plugs were out slowly poured mystery oil down the carb for a few minutes. I re-installed the plugs and it fired right up. As I went for a ride, I SLOWLY dribbled additional Mystery oil into the carb.
I went to Home D. pick up some black ribbed carpet runner and made a cover for the should. It looks great and its velcro "hinged" at the front so I can just lift it to remove shroud nut.
Best of luck! Rick

Can I hook up the muffs and supply some water to see if there will be water in cylinders again ? To rule out water thru carb theory ?

You should change the oil too. Cranking it over can force a small amount of water passed the rings. Better to be safe than sorry.

Good news guys. Actually pretty GREAT news. Ran the water thru the muffs for about 10 mins with engine off. No water in cylinders. Then cranked over with plugs out. No water in cylinders. Put plugs back in and cranked with no plug wires on. Cranked good.

Finally connected ign wires, and the ole lady fired right up in one turn of the engine.. Happy, happy, happy ! Guess it was the torrential downpours and an un-covered engine that made it's way thru the throttle body.
Now to change the oil as some of you suggested and figure out the high idle problem that just appeared. Thanks for all advice guys.

OH, and GO BRUINS !!!!!
