Is this the outdrive that I think it is?

Hi Everyone!

I'm hoping that you guys can help me to confirm what outdrive this actually is.

I *think* that it is a Volvo Penta 250 Aquamatic.

The reason I'm concerned is that I've seen other outdrives that say "Volvo Penta" where mine says "Commander."

This outdrive is hooked up to a Ford 351 Commander Engine.

Also, if anyone knows offhand where to get the correct info for this outdrive, feel free to mention it :) I can search and find it, but if you have it on hand it might save me some time.

Thank you in advance for any and all info!

Pics included....

I also found this tag which leads me to beleive that the Volvo Penta 250 is accurate.

It reads: PZ NR: 2528223B

Yes it's a Volvo Penta 250. The PZNR 2528223 B tells us this. The ending "B" says V-8 ratio [1.61:1] Also the fill port just below the shift cover, the inserts for the rev latch anti-rotation pins, and the transom shield give it away.

Commander got permission to use their name, just like Eaton and Chrysler did back then.
All drive parts needed will be Volvo Penta.

Commander also made their own PDS housing, and it's probably a single bearing unit. This means that the PDS can be removed out the rear without pulling the motor out.
I would for sure install a new bearing on it.

Thank you very much Bill! I looked around and thought I had it right, but there is nothing like the peace of mind that comes with confirmation!

Thanks again!

Re: Is this the outdrive that I think it is?

Quick question, I have a 1977 whitewater fishing boat. My question is the out drive (which I believe is the same drive as in this forum cause it is mated to a 351) is making a really bad clanking noise. When I spin the prop the lower unit seems ok but when you move the drive up and down by hand (like when you check the gimbal pins an bearings) it makes a really bad clanking noise. My question is do these drives have a coupler in the bellows near the transom that have a u joint setup? I have absolutely no knowledge of volvo drives. Just trying to get my boat back on the water. So I was wondering if I pull this drive what my next step would be?? Thank you very much..
