The tach was also for a 12 pole alternator outboard ??

I'm not sure that tach can be used on 4,6,8cyl I/O's and still have the correct setting for your outboard...As I said, it should be 6....4 has never been an option for a V4 J/E.<br />The 900 rpm in the water tells me for one thing, if the tach "is" right, it's idling way too high.<br />A service center can test against a shop tach...
