Ok newer to boating Iv taken it out a few times and learn something new every time i go out :) but I am starting to wonder with it being a 150hp evinrude (I think 1981) engine is getting 40 mph (had to replace the reader on the mph but tested it with a gps and seems to show the same) is that good mph for that size and age of motor? or should i be getting better?

Size and type of boat? weight wow many more items are needed...... If that is on a pontoon you are flying and as I mentioned it is about hull and size

The only way to really tell if you're maxing your speed is to have a tach and know what your motor's max RPM range is.

I would say not even close, a 17' bass boat with a 150 should be way closer to mid to upper 50s so I would say either the engine isn't running right, most likely or the hull is waterlogged but that set up should run much faster than that.

With a boat it isn't speed it is rpm, the engine is made to run a certain rpm and the speed ia what it is.

and likely a mismatched prop. I get 40 top with a 150 on a way bigger 21' deep v.
