Is this Water Pump to Gear Housing Adapter Installed Correctly?

This is part of the "Upper Gear Housing Unit" per the Crawley Marine diagram.

I do not have a press, so I installed the Water Pump Adapter Seal, # 47 into the Water Pump to Gear Housing Adapter, #45 by tapping it into place with a socket and a hammer. I think it was fully seated, but it was hard to tell.

Here is a picture after installing the Water Pump to Gear Housing Adapter into the OD.



Does that look correct?

Everything else seemed to go together correctly.

So you're asking if the water pump adapter plate should be flush with the upper gear housing? I have to check mine and see if it is. I have my original and a spare drive for parts.

I looked and it seems that they are more flush with the upper gear housing but as long as that seal doesn't leak, it might be fine.

Update - I'm pretty sure the Water Pump to Gear Housing Adapter was installed correctly because nothing leaks, I have good water flow, and the temperature is stable. If any of you have pictures of the Water Pump to Gear Housing Adapter installed to show that yours looks the same, that would be a good thing.

The other thing to look for is water in the gear oil, that seal is what keeps water from the water pump out of the gear oil.

Here’s mine, crusty one is my original run in salt water for 20+ years one
Next is a spare unit I bought for parts.
Both appear to be flush with the upper gear housing

Thank you for the picture. Yours is the same as mine. You can see the small lip where the adapter sticks out just a little from the upper stage gear housing.

Re checking for water in the oil, I agree. I will do that. If there is a leak that would make the oil cloudy and a whitish green. By comparing it to fresh gear oil, I should be able to determine if there is water in the gear oil.

The manual also says to drain a little oil using the drain port at the very bottom of the OD to look for oil. Since oil floats on water, the water should sink to the bottom. You will have to wait some time after running the motor to give the water time to separate out and sink. I will do that after I take to boat out. I will report back here what I find.

Sounds good! Today I replaced that o ring on the bellcrank & put the drive back on & fired it up after its long winters nap..
