As i was helping my niece out by changing her oil and plugs this past weekend, i noticed that there was a cracked hose that leads from the air filter to the throttle body on her 1996 4cyl automatic transmission Toyota Camry.

I could not locate this piece of hose anywhere else in my area but at the dealership, their price was $91.75 + tax.

I could not believe the price that the fella at the dealership quoted me, this piece of hose is about 14" long with a T junction approx in the middle of it.

Is this a rip off or what?

Does anyone know of anywhere else that i may be able to purchase this part from other than at a Toyota dealership?

I owned a Honda accord one time and it seemed like every little part on that car was $100 to replace.

$100.00 for a 14 inch piece of rubber hose is outrageous i think :(

Yep it's outrageous. Is it possible to find a metal or plastic tee fitting that you can fit into a straight piece of tubing with hoseclips?
I have done this in the past with difficult to get parts.

Can you repair the plastic with Goop? Or if it is really rubber how about a patch and some hose clamps.... either way you should get out of it cheaper.

The 3d option is a junk yard for a used part.

The price we pay for reliability, I guess? Seems to be a common thread amongst all fereign cars. Just the other day someone was complaining about parts cost for Mitsubishi's. I thought to myself, there is no difference between any of them. I just paid $20.00 for a $3.00 headlight relay for my daughters Lancer.

Even domestics are getting the swing of it. If it is not available in the aftermarket they stick it to you. And believe me, the MFG,R's know which parts are proprietary and which ones are not, so they just shift the cost onto the proprietary ones.

I also just paid about $85.00 for a 6" connector hose between the filler neck and the gas tank for my E150 Ford Van. Should have never cracked in the first place but I probably could have gotten something that would do from NAPA for $12-18.00, but I made the mistake in takeing the van to the dealer.

I can remember seeing a survey that some grad student did concerning auto parts.

The result were staggering, if you bought all the individual parts from the dealer to build a car from the ground up - it costs hundreds of thousands.

The make very little on the new car sale, they make squillions on the spareparts sales.

You guy's should take a walk around some of the wreaking yards there's tonnes of good parts awaiting the picking, around here on Saturday's a special for 40 bones all you can carry.Buddy of mine{Moose his nickname] carried a motor out with a chain around his neck,he is a monster though,6'4 280lbs of solid muscle,it did take alot out of him but he made it outside the gate, then we hoisted it up on the truck. Many beers later he recovered

OK, I'm only impressed if it was a V8 :D :D :D

As for the hose, are you sure there is nothing special about it? If not, I'd definitely look around for an alternate way of putting it back together. Check the plumbing departments, pneumatic or hydraulic suppliers for a brass 'T' and buy the hose by the foot from most automotive job shops.

Salvage yards.

If they don't have it most are connected to a national computer network where they will be able to locate it for you.

On my daily drivers that is where 90% of my parts come from. My race cars are a different story, but if you look around you can find it all.

This may just be a crankcase vent hose connected to the air breather to help heep those poisenous gasses from the oil vapor out of the air. It might be fine as is.

Vlad, used is the way to go. try copartfinder.com it may be hard to search for just that piece, but you will find out where the 1996 Toyota Camrys are at. A "junk yard" may not have it, cause that car is still kinda "late model". And if you call the same salvage yard that your insurance company calls, it won't be a cheap price, but it'll be perfect. But as DD says, they should be connected to many other yards & be able to find it for you.
If you lived in Peoria, IL I'd say call Mike at Neal's 800 322-2210.

Always check the junk yards first, I've got a 98 malibu that I've got several parts for out of different junk yards.
