is wires right or did i have to many

hello i just put a new powerpack or my 91 115 v4 evenrude and had a backfire problem i put wires in right order and double checked them time and time again still a problem but after switching them where 1 and 3 wires are switched and so on for 2 and 4 it ran fine is this ok or is something backwards somewhere else thank you for the help :

Confirm by checking the OMC shop manual for your engine. If you don't have one now is the time -- -- ---

i have the manual for the engine and by placing the wires in the books order it does not run, im also going by the color on the wires to and by length but still reversing them is the only thing that works

you were right the motor runs counterclockwise with wires switched. Returned them back to the right way but the motor won't fire over. Any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks
