Is Yamaha still building motors for Mercury? I thought I read that Mercury was going to produce their own motors from now on, but I can't anything about it now.

i think they split ways on the bigger motors, but i bet the smaller motors will still be built
what they did was swap a little bit of each-others technology

I believe that Yamaha and Mercury have gone their separate ways after Mercury filed the dumping lawsuit against them. Tohatsu now makes the 40hp and under powerheads as well as the orbital injection technology for the optimax which will eventually be phased out when Mercury goes to all four stroke. I could be wrong though.

I don't know the entire situation but I do know for sure that all 90hp and up Mercury's are no longer Yamaha at all.

In the U.S. Mercury's from 30 hp and down are Tohatsu models that are painted black and have Mercury decals put on them. In other parts of the world Mercury sells larger Tohatsu models as Mercurys. Rumor has it that Tohatsu will soon be providing the 115 down in DFI engines for Mercuy.

I guess its not common knowledge, yet.

Tohatsu, eh? I had no idea. Does this mean we will start to see a bigger Tohatsu presence in North America? As much as I've heard about them I have yet to see one. And I live in a harbour city on the Great Lakes so you'd think I'd have seen one by now.

Thanks for the replies.

I have had Nissans (same as tohatsu) since mid-80's. Until mid-90's, don't think I ever saw one on the water. Since then it has been slowly growing and seeing more each year. I don't see big increases of dealers in the area. I think allot are sold via Cabela's and other mail and internet sources.

Neither did I, so I guess their making Mariner 30s and under as well?

Depending on what section of the world you are in...assorted 50's and down. Mariner was supposed to be a non U.S. name for Mercury's sold outside the U.S., but I understand that some are now suddenly being sold in the U.S. again. None of the Mercury built engines from 30 hp down can pass the EPA guidelines, so its a safe bet that any current production Mariner is a Tohatsu.
