I know most of you in the south have open water on the lakes most of the time if not always. We poor suckers up here in the North have to deal with ice.I do not know if my favortite lake is open as its too far to go see but I do have one about 4 miles away and it still has 4 inches of ice on it here in Nebraska..Anyway are all you other northerners in the same boat as me so to speak with solid water or are your lakes open?..I want open water dammit...

Up here in the "more north than you Nebraska folks" there is still ice in all the important places such as the bays, boat launches, etc. I'm sure in Georgian Bay there is open water somewhere but that doesn't help if there is a mile or three between the shore and the water.

Cheers.

Yeah your further North for sure.I have only been to Canada once and that was in July. The weather was decent but the water was cold for sure...Did a little Scuba up there and it was not real bad with my wetsuit but sure did not want to just jump in and go for a swim naked, theres a picture I am sure you did not need to imagine,LOL Bruce

Oh yeh, still have 12-14" of ice on the lake. Shoreline is pretty broken up though but still possible to get out there. No longer safe because the ice has changed structure and is very weak BUT people still try to venture out for "one last fishing trip". There were 5 people rescued last weekend just off the end of my street when they went thru the ice. Lucky to be alive.

Can't wait for the soft water again.

i don't know. ain't been out to the lake for 3 or 4 weeks now. last time i was there i was walking on it. surely it's starting to melt though. area 2 ramp should be interesting to go see. whoever takes them out in the fall missed that one. the dock pipes were all bent over in the ice. hope it didn't get ruined. i like area 2.

usually out by end march, or 1st part of april. gonna watch it this year a bit though. got out last year at the end of march and then april was horrible cold. gonna watch and see what i think over a little time.. us nebraskans gotta be cool ya know. we can see all 4 seasons in one day...

Ziggy.I have not been down to Branched Oak for about five years now.It seemed to just get to crowded there anymore. Its a decent lake and maybe I will go there some this year on weekdays. Its only about 60 miles from Columbus so I do not know why I do not go there more often though,oh now I remember,I like to go to SD a lot as they have less Bullcrap rules there.Branched Oak you cannot even sit at the camp in the Eve and enjoy a Brewskie,SD has no such rediculous laws in the State Parks I know of. Do you fish Walleye there? If so been catching any the last couple years? Bruce

all i can say to that is yep. very busy on weekends. usually a few lunatic non boaters with boats out too. i been going late on sat. eve and returning sun early afternoon after the lunatics show back up.
oh now I remember,I like to go to SD
i hear ya there. lewis and clark is where it's at. i didn't get there last year. bummed me out. i like to get there at least once a year. more if i could but the distance thing makes it a bit of a chore. great place though. love it. for an alternative for something different i opt for the missouri river. that is usually very exciting boating. probably don't want to let the uscg catch ya swillin on the river if ya could help it though..

don't let me scare ya off branched oak. it's tolerable + the best game in the area size wise. i was pretty surprised last year. most folks mostly behaved pretty well. though there was 2 deaths on the lake last year. i just missed being in the middle of it. happened on a sun. morning early about 8 am. i was on the wrong side of the lake to be a witness or do anything about it. it was a very peaceful morning. couldn't believe it happened.

can't let ya in on the fishing scene. i don't fish. but there sure are a lot of fisherman out there. one night i got caught in a tournament. i kept wondering why it was so busy on the lake at 11:30 pm... found out the next day when all the fishermen came in and were showing off there catches. couldn't see what they caught though. i was to far away.

anywheres else ya go from columbus? i'm always wanting to try new lakes if i have the money and time to go check em out.

I'm one of those southern guys and we have open water year round. Ocasionally a pond will freeze for a few days but it always thaws in less than a week. I just can't imagine living with all that frozen precipitaion for so many months. When we do get snow it is gone in no more than 48 hours and we go back to fishing and playing golf. We are spoiled down here for sure.

Ziggy, yes I heard about the deaths on the news last year. You do not fish?Thats terrible.Just kidding you..I do not go to Lewis and Clark real often. One time last year..I prefer Ft Randall Dam on Lake Frances Case. The differance in the water quality from that lake around 60 miles west of Lewis and Clark lake is amazing.Ft Randall has clear crisp water that you can see the bottom a long ways down.It is crazy the differance between the two lakes being on the same river.Depending on where you live it could be a long distance but for me it is around 140 miles but well worth the extra drive.

Jim yes you have it made down there.I think we had snow on the ground from early Dec and there is still some in the big drifts..I am serious about wanting to leave here to a gentler climate and may when the last kid graduates but beside the weather its really a good place to live and raise a family...Bruce

 i obviously need to get there. i was initiated into lake life and boating in mn. on a very clean, clear lake.. i miss it.
distance kills me. if i remember right i'm 4 hrs from lewis and clark, 5 hrs from big mac. recon the two your talking about would be in the 5 hr range for me.. i'm 25min from being on branched oak.. its just easy for me.

if ya ever do the river you'll really be bummed out... it's filthy is about all ya can say about the water quality.

Even the Missouri River up there is very clear. The guy I got certified to Scuba with does dam tailrace dives there.I want to do it too but have never got to it..He claims the visibility even below in the tailwaters is 30 feet.I believe it as it is clear for sure...

These were taken on March 12th. If there is still any left, I wouldn't be walking on it. Lake will come up at least 4' from in those pictures till end of April.
