I'm going to paint the boat this spring and just wondering if anyone knows the color code or something really close to the light tan used on the mid 80's islanders? There are a few spots I'm going to have to hit with zinc chromate primer...can I put finish paint directly over the zinc primer?
Thanx!...Dan

Dan i'm not sure of what the color code is for that year. But what I think your going to run into is that the paint your trying to match has some 20 years of fading/customization via the weather to it. Even if you do find the correct color it wont match very well. Just my .02

Ya I guess your right on that point....interlux has a few that are close so I think thats the way I'll go...going to be a complete re paint not just touch ups, so if its not spot on it really doesnt matter.

Good thinking! Good luck with the project! I just did a tan paint on my restoration. It turned out awesome!

I am in the same pickle on my '83 Islander, I did take some polishing compound and a buffer and brought back the shine, however the sides have some scratches the previous owner put on from docking or attempting to dock I should say. I am thinking of getting a color a shade different and masking at the strake line so everything below will appear two tone. i figure that will look better than a mismatch. Topside has very few scratches, so if the buffer will bring it back then just the lower sides and transom is all that will need paint.

What did you end up using for paint? Did you spray or roll & brush?

I rolled mine on and it actually came out GREAT. I used valspar porch and floor paint from Lowes, its a polyeurothene fortified oil based paint it will hopefully be very durable. And there is a ton of colors available. Heres the two colors I picked the bottom color does have a little more tan than what these pics show.

Nice job, looks really good! I'll have to check those paints out the next time I get over to Detroit.
