It is time to replace 350 motor - AQ260

It is time that we replace the 350 Chevy engine in our 24' Campion Haida. The head gasket went late this summer and with 1752 hrs a fix is not reasonable. We will be ordering a 350 Chevy marine rebuilt long block for it.

There are four partners in the boat so the pain is / 4.

I have read a bit about removing the engine, and what I have read is the best way to get the old egine out is to remove the top of the leg to access the 4 bolts for the engine.

There will be three of us working on removing the engine the boat is on a trailer and we have a backhoe line up for the final lift. My question is about how long will it take use to have the engine ready to lift out. The maifolds and risers are off, but everything else is still connected, (gas line, electrical, shifter, hydralic steering, and leg).

Thanks

How long depends on the experience of the ones doing the job, and the access in your particular boat and that changes model by model, year by year. It can take anywhere from 1 hour to 1 day.
Then you have the frozen fastner problem if it's ever been in salt water.

Thanks for this info.

Not sure about frozen fastern problems, the boat is in salt water and I am wondering about engine mounts. We had a few problems with bolts on the risers and manifolds, but impact drive and WD40 seen to work fine. There is lots of room in the engine compartment of the Campion. The engine is below the floor and the floor panel can be easily removed to prevent possible damage. Just worry about the engine mounts though.

How much should we strip the engine down? Should we remove carb and cooling before we try to remove it??

Next question is where should we get our rebuild from. We are in BC souther gulf islands. Our plan at this time is to get the engine shipped to Northwester Washington and pick it up there and take it across the board ourselves.

I know there is a rebuider in Spokane WA would like some recommendations if possible. Only want to do this once.

Thank
Dale

Thanks

Just remove the lag bolts that hold the mounts to the stringers, Then, when you have the engine out of the boat, you can remove the mounts and clean up the thread. I always go through and make sure all the threads on the mounts are clean and work freely before installing them back in the boat.

Anytime I take a Volvo out, I also replace the bearings and seals in the flywheel cover. The only way you can get to them is by removing the engine, and for 50 bucks worth of bearings and seals and some new clean grease, you can be sure they are OK.

Might want to have a look up in the Adults Only sticky and look through the Volvo information. Manuals and other info there.

obviosly a lot of people unhappy with Jasper, all I can say is that the shop where I work has been using Jasper engines and transmissions for the last 4 years and we have had only 1 trans go bad. The warranty service was prompt and courteous and no questions asked
