I installed a new housing for my Tower of Power 115 1980 lower unit's water pump. When i dissembled it i see a fat fibrous washer on the shaft which looks like it is doing nothing. When i installed the new housing there's this cavity in the housing right above where the impeller lies..... about 1/8 inch space. So i put this new washer in there. Fits nice and snug and looks like it belongs......
Is this right? or did i mess up......
Won't be the first time i take this puppy apart again.....It'll be the 4th.....

Not familiar with your motor but the practice of installing parts where you think they belong is not the best approach :D.

Take a look at the exploded assembly drawings for your motor and see where it really belongs.

Great pictures. It looks like it's the seal #34 called a ring. So i fit it in the cavity that is part of the upper housing of the water pump. It seals the drive shaft to the housing i'm guessing.
In my defense i did try to scope it out but the drawings weren't that clear and the old one wasn't in the same place but up the shaft a bit. I also didn't lube it at all thinking that the water would be the lubricant.

Well it looks like its gonna be 5 times that you have pulled the unit. Item 34 is indeed required, however it does go outside the waterpump housing. Its purpose is to protect the seal that is built into the upper waterpump housing. Often the ring works up the shaft a little which is where you saw it sitting there doing apparently nothing.
