Hello,

I have a 1983 Johnson 4hp Seahorse (Model No: J4BRLCTA) and after a painful restoration/servicing I managed to get it start!:D

After fixing the electrics, placing a new impeller and installing a new carb kit I was unable to start it even with the proper settings for the carburettor (low speed needle at 1.5 turns.

So, I thought of a rather "dodgy" way to start it. I removed the spark plugs and with the aid of a syringe I squirted a few ml of gasoline inside the piston area. I placed them back in and after turning the cord 1-2 time it coughed and then started! I am not sure if squirting gasoline in there was a good idea or not. Could someone tell me if this was ok to do? Or perhaps of an alternative way to start it?

Anyway, now I got some issues/questions to solve! For that I have attached 2 pictures for reference.

-Since this engine did not came with manual/instructions, I would like someone to please tell me what marks B, C are. I am guessing that in point A it stops:cool:

-I managed to start the engine only when I placed the red knob in point C. If during the operation I return the red knob to point B, half way towards point B, the engine stops! Why is that?

-The engine starts only with the choke (point D) open. If I close it any time during its operation the engine stops! Is this normal?

-In point E there is the shaft which after running the engine for about 1'-2' it gets very hot. I see smoke from the exhaust but shouldn't there be water coming out like in the other engines? I have a new impeller on it!

-The red knob travels all the way to point F, which is on the side of the engine. Is that normal? Should it stay in the front side of the engine only?

Thank you in advance
