I have an older Mercury and had to be hauled back to shore because of engine trouble.
I have a 1975, 65 horse Mercury outboard. It would start but when I reduced the choke and put it into gear it stalled out. I just had it serviced and the only thing they changed was the plugs and oil.

Please help me to. :(

Hopefully they didnt charge you to "change the oil". Its a 2-stroke...they don't have oil to change. 2-strokes rely on a fuel/oil mixture to lubricate instead of a wet oil sump like a conventional 4 stroke motor.

Sounds like the low speed jets may be set a bit lean, or the rpm adjustment needs to come up a bit. What rpm does it spin when in neutral? Have the carbs been cleaned or adjusted in recent years?

I guess I should have said the gear oil was changed.
I did read the manual about the idle mixture adjustment. I just have to wait till I can get someone to come to the lake with me in case thats not the problem.
This is my first boat and I have to learn as I go.
As far as RPMs go there no tac on the boat. Its a 1962, 18ft Duratech.
Since I just got the boat I'm not sure about the carb being cleaned or adjusted.

Ahh.... gear oil. :)

Probably not a bad idea to have the carbs cleaned with new needles and seats. Not a really tough job to do yourself, if you're into that sort of thing.

I'd recommend changing the water pump impeller as well, if they did not do that when they serviced the gear oil. That 3cyl 65hp likes to have a good cooling system, and to be properly set up. If not, they have a tendancy to eat pistons. A little preventative maintenance goes a long way.

Once the carbs are set up well, it should treat you well. I've been towed before, and can appreciate you did not enjoy it.
