Re: It's Alive... It's Alive!!

Looking good Ed, nice work as always:)

As far as the pull cord...do you just wrap it around the flywheel and tug it so it pulls free?

Just curious, on the bigger OB's it seems that the emergency cord is not permanently attached ever.

I guess my '70 800 is lacking the emblem, kinda neat how they discontinued little things like that year to year. Makes each vintage unique.

I'm waiting on the weather to warm up as well, plenty of jobs that I can't do in the garage when it's 30 in there.

Yup! just like those old lawn mowers..... before auto rewind.

Right you are.:D The pic below, shows it stored in a clear plastic pouch, which is attached to the insulation blanket. It willl be glued to the inside of my wrap-around cover, when it is all done.

Ya know, I was pretty surprised to discover some of the suttle differences from year to year too.
I have a spare '70 emblem. If you need it, gimme a shout:)

Ed , mike39 ; I'll let the cat outa the bag ....I stopped by MAC Marine on Rt 123 in Norton Ma but the sign on the door of his shop says "closed for the season" but has an "If parts needed call" (508) 222-1935 annotation . He has a few 60's+70's merc's displayed on the showroom with an older Kikehoffer(sp??) merc and a few old things like a champion and maybe a machulloch . Hi Guys
It's been awhile...... Since things are warming up a bit, I thought I'd get some painting done on my wrap-around cover and cowl.

The first thing I did was to give the aluminum a bath in a mixture of white vinegar and water It's a 50:50 mix.

Next, I hung it on the line and hosed it off well.

Once dry, I put on several light coats of zinc chromate.

The primer drys quickly. I inspected it for any foreign matter (bugs etc.) Being out doors I had a few dust nibs. So, I lightly sanded them out with 600 grit w/d paper used dry.
I let the primer harden for a while and moved onto the cowl.

Here is the finished paint on the wrap-around. The photos aren't that great. But it came out very nice.

The trick here is to lay on light coats about one coat every half hour.
I put on four light ones and the last coat is a heavy wet coat.
the top cowl didn't come out as nice as the wrap around. gonna try to buff it up. Stay tuned more pics to come!

Re: It's Alive... It's Alive!!

Hi Ed -

Kudos on the engine rebuild, it looks fantastic! I'm starting to disassemble a Merc 700 FGS to give it some fresh paint (among other things). I've got the lower unit off but am struggling with how to disassemble the driveshaft housing from the transom mount and/or swivel bracket. Ive seen your pics and they are helpful but could you describe the steps you took?

Thanks much,
Chris

Buy a manual for your motor!! Especially if you're taking it apart & hope to have it work (& last) when reassembled.

I've have the original parts manual, service manual and owners manual. Purchased all from what is now eastcoastmarineservice.com.

The only mention of the transom mount is on page 7a of the service manual and it relates to specifications and dimensions on mounting the motor to the transom. Since you were quick to say "buy a manual!", perhaps you can point me to the page where the illustration of the merc transom mount is located?

Not trying to steal this thread, was looking for some insight from the original poster. I'll post my question elsewhere.

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,
Thanks for the nice comments!
When I pulled my mid section, I had the powerhead off already. I wanted to change the upper mounts any way. It was much eaiser to do it that way. I'm not sure how it's done otherwise. I'll have a look in my book to see if I can be of any help.:D

Re: It's Alive... It's Alive!!

Hey Chris
I just checked my manual.. My Manual is a factory Merc manual from 1969. Number C-90-68647. Secton 6C-12, page 671. Explains it. Sorry I don't have a scanner. Anyway, the power head does have to come off.

Hope that helps ;)

Re: It's Alive... It's Alive!!

Thanks for the reply Ed. I was able to remove the "shocks" on each side, then disconnected the spring from underneath the mount. Next, I pulled out the steel tube the the motor pivots on and was able to disconnect the motor from the transom mount.

I'm going to follow some of your recommendations for prep and paint of the motor. Thanks again for all the info in this thread.

Cheers,
Chris

Re: It's Alive... It's Alive!!

Hi, Ed just read you whole thread, It's has been very interesting and Your thread on the MFG. And beleive it or not I have a 67 Ewinboro Special that i picked up just before christmas. it seems to be in almost execellent shape. meaning it has'nt been in water all that much. the transon is solid as a rock and floor is to with just a few cracks from shrinkage of curing for 40 some years. Well to make it short you have pointed me in the direction i want to go with it. And from the work i have seen you do here makes me want to get started on it since the weather has made a turn for the good. SO FAR THIS IS THE BEST RESTORATION THREAD I HAVE SEEN.And i have started reading alot of them. Also i would like to send you pictures of my MFG to get your opinion on it. Keep up the outstanding work and posting. i love this stuff and the old MFG's. Regards, Rowdyboy

Re: It's Alive... It's Alive!!

Hey Rowdyboy

I'm real pleased you enjoyed the threads on my MFG and Merc 80 rebuild. It's been way tooo long since I posted anything on their progress. Unfortunately I lost my job a year ago and haven't had the money to do much. On the bright side, I got some work a few weeks ago. Don't know how long it's gonna last, so I'm stock piling any spare cash I get.
I've only had one 40 hour week since I started back three weeks ago. Hoping things get better ;)
Been chomping at the bitt to do something. But as the old saying goes.... Got the time, but no money, Got the money but no time....

My wife says, "Once I finish the spring yard work, I can fiddle with the boat" As much as I'd like to get back to my boat projects, she's kinda right. Besides, once I start back, not much else gets done around here! :D
So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed, If all works out, I'll be posting some pics of the cockpit redo.

Keep checking back... OBTW, glad to have you on the MFG Forum!

Yanks21,
You bet ya! Especially the older ones. It was a well known fact back then too! Why people didn't do a bit more maintenance (flushing) is beyond me  Glad you liked the thread. I'll be trying to finish it up in the next month or so.
