[colour=blue]Where else, but e-bay!

Put up 5 items for sale last week. Numerous questions began arriving via the member to member email system. So far, no problems.

Yesterday, I got online to check my ebay status, I had to login (which isn't unusual) but I was getting an error message saying 'incorrect password' - doh! :%

I contacted e-bay, they responded immediately via e-mail and then telephone. After it was established that I was the correct account holder, they suspended all activity on my account. The ebay guy found numerous messages regarding items for sale that I DID NOT have for sale.

He established that one of the member to member email questions was spoof mail (but it looked genuine!). The spammers had changed my login page address, When I tried to login, the scumbag spammers got my password :$ .

The login page looked genuine, even the ebay guy said that it looked genuine.

Now I have to change every freaking password for every freaking account I've got :|

Be careful guys and gals, check that login page address before you punch in your password.

Re: I've been scammed!

Sadly, this seems to happen to a lot of folks. The advice is to NEVER and I mean never click on a link to say Ebay or Paypal from an email. The bad guys are pretty slick in making their websites and 'login' pages look like the real deal, just to get your login and password.
If you receive emails regarding the status of your account (usually stated as some problem with your account info), launch your browser and go to the website directly, NOT thru a link in an email. Usually you'll login just fine, because there's really no problem with your account. BTW, 'checking' the source of the link is not always so obvious that it's a phony link. It's best to go to the website yourself...directly.

Sorry to hear about you getting caught up in a phishing scheme.

Once bitten twice shy, Aldo. Let me hijack this thread by posting a reply I recieved from treedancer ala xtraham: <UNEXPECTED_DATA_AFTER_ADDRESS@.SYNTAX-ERROR>
Sent: Saturday, February 17, 2007 1:04 AM
Subject: Re: treedancer /friend
this could be due to the fact that my first reply to his enquiry bounced and this is an echo. There was nothing new in the reply so I am assuming all is a ok with the dancer. I will forward the complete message to anyone who thinks they might have the answer.

Re: I've been scammed!

I hope it did not hit your wallet. I have had a slight issue with ebay lately too..... read on..

I keep getting "phishing" type messages via My Ebay. At first I was posting them on my site as "phishing" and also send a notification to ebay....... the result was a scolding message from ebay that I was communicating with these people...........

New tactic ...... instead of posting the questions I reported them directly to ebay and the result was........ the exact scolding message from ebay that I was communicating with these people........... ???????

It is clear that ebay is not doing their job and is going down the tubes. They are quick to point the finger but scold the seller who is innocent??? POOR business practice.

For the amount of money they charge we should anticipate better safer service. The member e-mail system sucks. Ebay needs to repair it.

Re: I've been scammed!

It is sad that ebay can identify those messages as scams and phishing but continues to forward them to members via My Ebay?? What is wrong with this picture?

Bingo! I also received a scolding message from e-bay for 'communicating'. But I didn't!
I must admit though, the live ebay guy who helped me was excellent, he fixed the problem very quickly.

I didn't lose any money, just pride - I feel like an idiot for getting sucked into this...................

Oh well, we live and learn.

Re: I've been scammed!

What they're doing is called a triangulation scam. It's all about turning a stolen credit card into cash. They steal a CC or CC number. The post an item on eBay that is sold on Amazon for example. They purchase the item with the stolen CC then have it drop shipped to the eBay buyer that won the auction. The eBayer sends a check or money order to the criminal.

I know this because it happened to me. I figured it out when my Delta saw came in from Amazon. I managed to contact the people who's eBay account got stolen. I called the police in the town I was supposed to send the money to. I called Amazon too. Amazon and the Police were not very interested.

The eBay people got their account back. Amazon said they'd credit the card purchase. The crook got nothing and I got a free saw. Sometimes you get lucky I guess.

No they don't.

These always come through email. The one way to avoid phishing is to always look through your messages in "My Ebay".

Re: I've been scammed!

I too have never received a phishing email in My Ebay, only in direct emails.

All emails from ebay will have both your real name (Bob Smith) and your ebay user name (bobbysellerman) in the email.

BUT, even some of the very crafty phishing emails are starting to have these.
Anyone that has ever bought or sold anything with you, has these 2 bits of info now.

And during post sale communications, it is so much faster to email the buyer directly, rather than going through ebay, so many people are doing this to save time. But this is how they get the third piece of the puzzle.

Now they have your user name, real name, and email address, so they can make an awfully authentic looking "email from ebay".

So, do all communications only through the ebay mail system or via telephone, and only communicate with ebay through the "my ebay" message system.

"" "Do, or do not. There is no 'try'." Yoda "" - I hated that creepy little Yoda, but he had some good lines.

What's wrong with this story?

You can't talk to ebay on the phone.

First you say you can and then you cant? This very unsettling. That is why I don't do EBAY.

Holy crappola! Have I been suckered twice?!

I contacted ebay through the ebay.com website, in 'My Messages' I clicked on 'Contact Us'. I told them of my woes. The following is the e-mail I received shortly after (I have blanked out sensitive information) -

[colour=red]Hello Aldo,

assist you further with your concern on your account.

I have reviewed your account and it appears that it may have been
accessed by someone that was not authorised to access your account.

Please contact our Live Help team for assistance restoring access to

the page)

[colour=blue]I did exactly as instructed, within minutes I was chating online via the 'live help' link. The ebay chat guy wanted to ring me and ask some questions to confirm my identity, he had my number, and my date of birth etc. He rang me, we spoke briefly and then hung up the phone and continued to 'live chat' via the live help. He emailed me a temp password. He asked me to log onto ebay and change my temp password to a completly new one. His instructions were very specific - only go through the ebay website, never respond to emails outside of the website, if an email link directs you to a login page - DON'T. etc etc etc

I did as he said, everything is back to normal.

BTW, I don't have a paypal account, I don't use credit cards. I have one bank account for ebay use and it only has about $20.00 in it. I'm not sure what they hope to gain from this but I think I'm covered - hopefully :^

Re: I've been scammed!

it gets me that a scammer got my work email when I bought my Harley through ebay, emailed me at work asking for the money from the sale of said Harley. That account was not linked to ebay, nor did anything on ebay have where I worked. of course I sent it to ebay with the standard responce from them. Like said above only reply through ebay!
