I'm just not understanding how to keep the engine from dying when shifting into forward or reverse. I can shift into neutral without the engine dying. This restarting and restarting is killing me and the starter.

Do I need to lube the switch which was mentioned? Do I need to replace or lube the cable? Can you tell me how to lube these things and what lube to use?

Just went throught this same problem. I replaced the shift cable and adjusted all of the linkage. It works like a charm now. If you have not ajusted anything prior to your problems than its probably the shift cable. When I finally took off my shift cable it had a spot about 2" long that had worn down to the metal. and let moisture in and caused the cable to drag. When there is to much friction on the cable it screws up the shift interrupter switch.
