We have a 96 9.9 in the shop that has been to a different shop 3 times for the same problem, they gave up on that dealer (also a johnny rude dealer) and brought it to us. The problem is it will not idle for long periods no matter how it is adjusted. My partner (a master johnson/evenrude certified mechanic) seems to recall that that vintage 9.9 suffers from that problem and it is basically not a problem that can be solved. Walker, DHadley, anybody familiar with this problem?

Don't seem to recall any problem like that with 9.9/15's Jim. The engines I've worked on will set and idle in gear or out of gear with no problems.

How long are we talking about "long periods of time"?

Is this in gear or outta' gear and what does it do when it finally stops....spit/sputter then stop or just stops? Surely the engine temp has been checked.

Re: J10redd idle problem

The owner uses it to troll at a dead idle. It will idle along for 3 or 4 minutes just fine, then coughs, runs rough and dies. (at least thats what i read in the trouble report)

EDIT: this is the vintage with the "plastic carb"

What does he have to do to restart? Is the primer bulb empty?

When you say vintage....does that mean a carb with the flat plastic top?

Around these parts, Muskie hunters will troll all day with a 9.9 and not have a problem.

Have you done any troubleshooting and what kind?

Re: J10redd idle problem

OBJ, I don't have those answers right now, I'm not at the shop this weekend, but i will call my partner and find out, and yes it is the plastic top carb. We just recieved the motor the other day with the paperwork from the other shop and have not yet done anything with it (its still snowing out here) We were mostly trying to determine if there was a known problem with this vintage 9.9 before we invested much time trying to diagnose what is wrong. I will post answers tomorrow after i talk to my partner.

Re: J10redd idle problem

OBJ it appears after talking to my partner that what it doesn't do is idle slow enough and dies when he slows down the idle to troll at about .6mph We really need some good weather here to take it out on the lake with a gps and tach. We may just leave the idle turned up and reprop it.
