I just picked up a boat with above motor, vro is still hooked up, I dont have alot of experince with these motors I was wanting to find some useful info as what to look out for, or do to keep this thing running.I was also wondering about the gearcase on it. Thanks in advance.

Overall a pretty good motor. It did not come from the factory with a VRO but rather the newer OMS pump. Don't confuse the two. The motor is pretty sensative about spark plug heat range so try to stay with Champion plugs and 87 octane.

What would you like to know about the gearcase? If you think it isn't the stock one post a pic and we'll see if we can figure it out.

I see you mentioned MMI, where do you live? Are you working at a marine shop now?

No I dont work at a marine shop I did for a very short time.Then went back in the oilfield, I was looking at the model codes and it said something abou the V being a special gearcase, and is the oil injection better than the vro system.
Right now it has NGK plugs that look like hotter plugs what should be in the motor?

They were designed around champion plugs, I can't remember the exact plug but I think its QL78 or QL77? , a dealership can look them up on their computer.

I was wondering if the lower unit maybe geared down diffrent than most because thus is on a 21'5'' bayboat and it has one hell of a hole shot but no top end max is 38 MPH at 5400 rpm

I have a commercial foot, its geared to turn a bigger prop slower.

Unless someone swapped your lower end.
But thats a bigger boat than mine, I have a 20' CConsole.
And weight is another factor, you might consider posting in the prop forum.
