My johnson is about to get a sledgehammer to it! i have done everything by the omc manual from carbs to timing, when i start it, it will idle with the usual sneeze for the first few seconds, untill warm, then it will cough, then puff out some blue smoke, then idle , then it will do it over, and over, and over. i had the carbs overhauled, and this is how it ran when i got it back. well, i have worked on these for years, BUT i didn't have the time to tear it down and do it myself. i was told my powerhead needed overhaled. BULL****!!! i told this place. Needless to say, i brought it home, pulled the carbs and found two of the six rubber orings (carb to throttlebody) pinched and not sealing around the throat, the idle and intermediate air jets were all mixed up. i have since gotten it all back in place, but still have the sneezing, coughing, and puff of blue smoke. again, everyting is set by the omc manual for an 89 johnson 225.
compression is 90lbs on all.PLEASE HELP!!!!

I'm gonna guess you have a crankcase seal leak. Try spraying the crankcase halves seam with WD40 while the motor is running and see if it smooths out.

i sprahed carb cleaner, wd, and engine tune on the crankcase seal area's, around the reed blocks, and around the throttle body, also pulled the flywheel to see if any magnets are loose. no change. i guess i am going to have to repower with my old trusty '76 200hp evinrude. what kind of fuel/performace diference can i expect??

I think you need to move away from the carbs and start looking at the ignition... Strong spark on all 6? Bad ground somewhere maybe? Shrug. I could be in the wrong direction but it sounds like you've been through all of the carb and fuel stuff quite throughly... eliminating all leaks and whatnot.

FOUND IT!! while running the engine in the dark, i could see the spark running through two plug wires, for some unkown reason, i reached up and touched one of the wires, POW!!! knocked the fire out of my arse!!! pulled two wires off of my trusty 200, and it has run smooth for the last 45 min. yee haww!!
