J60ELCIA Help please

Hi, just signed up, looking a bit of help.

I have a Johnson 60hp out board (J60ELCIA), it hasn't been started in approximately 2 years, got it started today but can not get it to tickover. It starts and I rev it but when I stop it just dies.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Give it a basic health check.
Compression
Spark
Fuel delivery through the entire system
Spark plug condition.

Worthwhile giving the carbs a service, using fresh gas and due to the time out of service giving the water pump a service as well.
Post your results for all to review.

Thanks, will try the them, checked for spark and fuel which is fine. Fresh gas was also used.

Managed to get it to idle, but the revs are all over the place. Sometimes it was revving at 5000rpm in neutral

Thats to be sorted another day, going to get the timing done this week!

Going to sort a a progress thread soon.

Also the barrel I was using, the water in it turned very dirty (almost black) is that normal?

5000 in neutral = high possibility of creating a big, ugly paperweight

Yup haha, trying to sort it but ran out of petrol, getting more tomorrow and will start again!

What should it idle at ideally?
