my 1986 remote control is very stiff, especially the second half of going to WOT. The problem is in the remote itself, as it is stiff even when I disconnect the other end. Is there a way to lube the internal workings? Drill a strategically placed hole and put in a few drops of oil? silicon? whatever? or must I disassemble? Thanks, Harvey

The way you describe it, sounds like your control cables are bad. You can remove them from the box and the motor and try to move them by hand to see how stiff they are.

Did you loosen the adjustment knob?

The throttle friction knob is just below the key and above the cable on the OMC control. Turn it counterclockwise until there is just enough tension to keep the throttle arm from creeping while running.

thanks, guys.

I had tried the throttle friction knob but it does not seem to make much difference.

so, by process of elimination, the problem must be either the cables, or in the box.

Re: J60TLCDS remote control stiff

Just one more question: How free is the warm up (fast idle) lever when you raise it?

Re: J60TLCDS remote control stiff

lever lifts up easily about half way, then binds up. when I look at the throttle connections as I do this, I do not see any motion that would make me think that any fast idle is actually occurring. however, I realize that the amount of movement would be very small. I am very near the end of a slow, small-progress-at-a-time replacement of a rebuilt powerhead. A few more items to reconnect, then I can run it. MAy not get back to the boat (stored in a garage out of town) for 2 weeks. hope this limited reply gives a clue. thanks for the help.

Ok, sounds like throttle cable. You have to open the control to check anyway.

Disconnect battery, control in neutral, fast idle lever closed, take out two mounting screws and lay the control down flat, throttle handle facing down.

Unscrew the back cover and lift.

The manual suggests Triple Guard Grease.

If you don't have a parts diagram, go to the BRP Parts Diagrams and print out the diagram for your (Remote) control so that you can get help if you need it.

BRP Parts Diagram

Good luck.

Re: J60TLCDS remote control stiff

thanks,

manual describes both "snap in" and "long life" types of cables.

I hate to dismantle the remote control, then have Murphy be there in full force. Then I might have a failed repair with neither the old cables working stiffly, or the new cables of the wrong type and not installable.

so, is there a way to identify which type cable I have before I dig in?
