A lot depends on hull design and what you are trying to correct or accomplish. What hull do you have? What motor do you have?

96 fisher hawk 2v with a mariner magnum 40 is the boat im looking at buying. its a mod v. i want to put a hydraulic jackplate on it if i do buy it but not sure what set back

It will set back approx. 5/6 inches back of the transom.
You need to know if your steering and shift cables will be long enough.

I would suggest one of the hydraulic plates with 4" setback. You can always add spacers if you need more.
