I would like to know if my jackshaft has the right joints attached to it. It does not look like the parts manual shows. I have pic of what one end looks like.

That is what is bolted together and mounted on the rear of the jackshaft to the lower unit.

yes, the splined one is what goes from the flanged u-joint to the splined input shaft of the drive. the others go to the coupler on the motor side. you still need the shaft in between.

here is a few random volvo penta jack shaft pics (not knowing what you are working on)

Ayuh,... So the guy cheaped out, No u-joints, 'n no sliding coupler,.... That don't make it Right,...

If perfectly aligned I guess it's Ok, til ya gotta take something apart, which will mean pullin' the motor to service any part of it,...

Luckly I don't have to pull the engine since the engine is mid ship. Emailed Donna at Albemarle and she said that she didn't know that much about a single piece driveshaft and to contact Aqua Drive who manufactured it. The year mine was built they change design mid year to a 2 piece driveshaft. For me to change it will cost me about $3500 or about $4000 to convert to a 2 piece setup. Both are way to expensive for me as the boat is a 1994.

Those are CV joints and are definitely not a cheap out over u-joints, a new one would run you around $400 or a little more. Mack Boring & Parts Co will be your place to call for parts or replacements and you will need to speak to the guy that handles Aqua Drive stuff, the old guy was Jim Blainey but he died earlier this year and someone new is handling that stuff now. Inside the joint there are 6 steel balls in a cage that holds them around a spider and then about 4 or 5 oz of grease packed around them. For a quick check of condition grab the jackshaft and jerk up, if there is up and down play your joints may need attention (there should be a little forward and backward play), if no play they should be good to go, repeat this process at each end. Hopefully when you disassembled it you marked the orientation of each piece and of the jackshaft itself so that you can put them back together in the same way and avoid possibly needing to rebalance the jackshaft. Also, hopefully you either had good luck getting those bolts out or got replacements, as they are supposed to be torqued to 85 ft/lb and usually between the original torqueing and the force to break them loose the heads get deformed and I couldn't imagine the agony of trying to get one out if you were to shear it off. For any questions or information you may want or need on them go to carolinaclassicboatowners.com and look around, plenty of info on the CVs, the jackshaft, etc there, I know you have an Albemarle but the two share li and that jackshaft set up was used extensively in the Carolina Classics.

I guess I should have also asked what the problem was you were having with your jackshaft and/or joints in the first place and why you were considering replacing the whole thing? Its a pretty robust setup as is but if overall jackshaft replacement is order, a member on the Carolina Classic forum replaced the one in his 25 with a carbon fiber shaft earlier this year and has had great results, I believe it cost him about $1700, which is expensive but still much better than the options Albemarle quoted.
