Those are CV joints and are definitely not a cheap out over u-joints, a new one would run you around $400 or a little more. Mack Boring & Parts Co will be your place to call for parts or replacements and you will need to speak to the guy that handles Aqua Drive stuff, the old guy was Jim Blainey but he died earlier this year and someone new is handling that stuff now. Inside the joint there are 6 steel balls in a cage that holds them around a spider and then about 4 or 5 oz of grease packed around them. For a quick check of condition grab the jackshaft and jerk up, if there is up and down play your joints may need attention (there should be a little forward and backward play), if no play they should be good to go, repeat this process at each end. Hopefully when you disassembled it you marked the orientation of each piece and of the jackshaft itself so that you can put them back together in the same way and avoid possibly needing to rebalance the jackshaft. Also, hopefully you either had good luck getting those bolts out or got replacements, as they are supposed to be torqued to 85 ft/lb and usually between the original torqueing and the force to break them loose the heads get deformed and I couldn't imagine the agony of trying to get one out if you were to shear it off. For any questions or information you may want or need on them go to carolinaclassicboatowners.com and look around, plenty of info on the CVs, the jackshaft, etc there, I know you have an Albemarle but the two share li and that jackshaft set up was used extensively in the Carolina Classics.
