I need wireing color code as to wire colors for a 1989 japanese 40 hp mariner 2 cyl ser# 503832 40elto.
The motor had the wires cut to wire in to internal side controls and the motor was replaced with a 75 hp mercury. Thank you

Re: japanese mariner

I have always avoided working on any Japanese built mariner so not knowing if it was a 2 or 4 cyl. engine I thought that the link to the manual might help you, not start a problem. Good Luck

Re: japanese mariner

Does thbis mean you don't know what the wire colors are without buying a service manual?

Thanks for the manual, but this seems to be mercury color codes, the motor I have must be yamaha. Thank you very much

Re: japanese mariner

I may have given you the wrong info on this motor and that is the reason for my confusion. can you tell me if this motor runs on ignition or the stator will kill ground . I am in a world of hurt because when I run the starter with all wires disconeccet I get no fire as mercury ignition works with stator ignition with no wires hooked and you have to ground black with yellow stripe to kill the stator voltage.
Thank you
my serial # is 6e9 503832
40 hp 2 cyl oil injected 1989

Did you see it the link from carholme to Yamaha colors would work. Your engine is definitely a Yamaha

Do you have a service manual that shows my ignition, mine has one coil with 2 spark plug leads.
I tried for spark with only one plug wire with the other one hanging loose maybe that is why I get no spark, maybe the two have to be hooked to a spark source. I don't know but I believe the ignition is stator controled ignition.
Thank you very much for all your help. ruder

Thank you very much ladies that is exactly what I need It shows the white wire grounds out the ignition the rest are easy from here.
The spark problem was my fault, I grounded both plugs and I have fire. you people do the boating public a lot of good it's hard to get help from the service people. Thanks again
