I would think that the 25 hp Merc was a Tohatsu/Nissan engine.

Re: Japanese Merc Better Than US?

depends on what year
some years were belgium i think some were jap some are jap, built in france. soon they will be built in china. merc is trying to open facilities thre as well . gotta see a chinese black anchor:) :)
but a jap"junker" will far out last a us built junker. ask anyone who repairs multiple lines which has the most repair costs. I am thinking laddies is wishing. while its nice to be patriotic If I am making payments I would at least like to make the final payment before the first switch box or stator. in the past ten years I have owned my own shop as well as done contract work for 6 dealerships. I still do. I could fit all the ign coils, stators ,timers, pulsers and CDI units in a walmart shopping bag and walk away. would take 2 1/2 ton chevy trucks to haul off all the american junk.the only two yam four strokes we ever have problems with are the 25 and the 40. both made by merc and both use motorola electronics which fail with amazing regularity.
look about on the net for places to rebuild jap ECU's then look for american ECU rebuild facilities.none of the yam or suzuki place stock any stators, coils or timers or CDI units due to the incredibly low failure rate. a friend of mine (merc dealer) did his inventory last november and had over $15K in stators, coils and triggers and switch boxes. same as another that is BRP.

Re: Japanese Merc Better Than US?

ease on down to south america where there are plenty of 20-25 year old japjunkers that other than maint run almost daily. most the mercs and rude wont live 3 years without major ign failure. I base it on what I have seen in my travels, yes I do some work in south america as well :) .you antique does not have a CDI so that takes it out of the picture. a mag ignition with maint will out last the owner every time. it rarely cross fires and rarely just quits. I am talking half way modern equipment. Ihave seen one regulator fire on a 250yam that had an electric pot puller. it lasted 4 years before it lit off. most jonnyrude and mercs wont make 2 seasons with the entire motor. electronics aside most the mechanicals are about equal.its the failure prone US stuff I complain about.I dont consider failures due to poor fuel and lack of maint just failure on well maintained low hour use rigs.

His motor is a brand new 04 or 05 25hp Merc. He said when he bought it the dealer had Jap and US versions sitting next to each other in the boxes and even the boxes were different sizes. I think the one he got was maybe going to be sent to Japan

Re: Japanese Merc Better Than US?

salty dog
for my moneythe 3 cyl yamaha is a hard one to beat. the 25 fourstroke was a merc with silver/blue paint. dont know about this year. I also hear good things about the BRP E-tec motors but have not seen many here.
johnfromfla
aint no telling without me looking at it. odds are its a merc motor. look on the tag and it shoulde say where it was made. type in "mercury marine china" in google and have a read.

Re: Japanese Merc Better Than US?

scali
over all not a bad motor.
suffered from the standard stator/swichbox failures that are a merc trademark. also for commercial use or heavy pleasure the upper mounts were puny and fail often. I had some made from aluminium for my commercial guys.some could not get 6 months from a set of mounts. seems to be worse on the 20" version. if the mounts get to bad it interferes with the shifter and can cause gearcase problems on the tiller version. the vynil oil lines must be replaced as a maint item or they break. but the rest of the mechanical injection system was ok. the alarm module and tank switches are subject to the merc electroinics gremlins as well.
but overall not a bad running beast. with regular water pumps and a good tech doing the maint proactivly they go a long time.
