I was wondering if anyone might have news as to what degree the recent earthquakes and tsunamis have had an effect on the supply and sales of Japanese outboards. Thanks for any insight.

Re: Japanese Outboard Manufacturers

I would think there are enough parts in the market between dealers, shops and marinas to keep the flow going, as well as what was made in Japan before the disaster that is ready to be shipped. As for the motors, they produce alot more than what you see on the back of boats and whats sitting in shops. The production should pick back up and continue rolling before you see any real drop in availability, or have any issues getting a motor. When Yamaha stopped making 2 strokes, those motors are still plentiful today in "new production", and the parts are sill readily available anywhere. If Japan was some 3rd world country, I would expect them to be crippled for a long time and the flow would pretty much stop, but being that it's Japan.....they will be rolling again soon. The car market though.....alot more people have Japanese cars, which means alot more parts are used on a daily basis to fix problems (cars used EVERY day), and alot more people buy a Japanese car on a daily basis than the whole world buys Japanese outboards in the world. Which means....if you want a OB part, or a Japanese OB, your going to be ok. If you want a Japanese car, or need parts for your Japanese car...the longer you wait to get it...the less likely what you want or need will be available.

We live in a "World Economy". Many parts/assemblies come from many places.

The Japanese disaster will effect many, regardless of make.

I sell oem auto parts. 99 percent of what people want will be in plentiful supply because there are lots of them in the pipeline. The problems will be with the little oddball parts that the manufacturer expected very low demand for. When that supply runs out, parts could go on backorder for a long time. Normal maintenance stuff should be no problem.

Tohatsu and Yamaha have both indicated that they do not forsee any real production problem. I haven't seen anything from Suzuki or Honda in writing, but the Suzuki rep said they were not affected.

My dad is looking for a small Yamaha and the dealer told him yesterday to expect a shortage.

Here is an excerpt from an industry newsletter published yesterday:

While the three outboard manufacturers have suspended production this week, two marine electronics manufacturers say they are not experiencing any disruptions

Suzuki and Honda both confirmed that production at their outboard manufacturing facilities continues to be suspended. Yamaha announced last week that it would halt outboard production at its Japanese facilities until April 4.

Suzuki said on its website that it would halt production at its outboard assembly plant in Toyokawa for today and tomorrow. A statement on its website it would provide an update by April 1.

Honda has suspended production at its Hamamatsu outboard manufacturing facility since March 14th. The company said that it had restarted production on Monday at its outboard and power products facility in Kumamoto.

Furuno USA said in an email to IBI that there are no expected delays in production or export of products from its facilities in Japan. JRC also told IBI that its facilities were in tact, and that it did not expect any disruption in production

I would not worry about it if you try to support american products everyone in america needs jobs and health plans FIRST lets stop feeding the kids next door before we feed our own. This country needs to produce not just consume

At the moment..Japan is well..lets say " under construction " ..

They are/have been hit with a 9.1 EQ .. nuke plants under dire situation..tsunami floods big time..

I dont know the current position of Yamaha or Suki parts..but Im confident that they shut down for a small period of time ( less parts ).

I do know that some signatures of radiation is affecting some incoming and outgoing of commodities..

I dont think it will hamper some of the parts that are in the Pipeline..but to be sure that some things Might ( I stress Might ) be over cost value depending on what part of the world its made in....and supply..

Mc66-

The original poster asked what effect the recent disaster in Japan had on the Japanese outboard manufacturers. You chose to use his question to seize the opportunity to post political commentary.

Buying American is pretty tough to do when you are talking outboards.

If you are buying a Mercury over 75 HP- yes you are buying American. How about the Mercury 40-50-60 that is built in China? How about everything that Mercury sells that is smaller than 40 that is built by Tohatsu in Japan?

How about BRP/ Evinrude headquartered in Quebec? (with some manufacturing done in China and the US).

Or Nissan/ Tohatsu, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki all built in Japan?

The reason that I commented on your post is because it was political commentary and had nothing to do with the original posters question.
