I just inherited my dads 2000 Javelin Renegade 19 with a 175 Evinrude. He is getting older and decided to give up hunting and fishing so he GAVE the boat to me!!! This boat was bought brand new by him and I have ALL paperwork since the day he bought it plus all service records. It was ALWAYS stored in his garage and kept covered when not being used. It's tan o n the bottom with black mid stripe with gold metalflake in the black and a red pinstripe separating the 2 colors. VERY sharp looking boat. Now then, I've had it up to 73mph so far and it scared the hell out of me because it started chine walking REALLY bad. Is there anything I can do to prevent it from doing that? I want to see just how fast I can get this thing going too.......any ideas on top speed??????

Get more experience with the power trim, but at 73 mph that light of a boat is GONNA chine walk quite a bit. Smart Tabs will help also. But I'd think SLOW DOWN a bit until you get used to it would be a great idea!

Re: Javelin given to me and I have a question

I gotta get used to the boat one way or another at high speeds so I need some advice please, not telling me to slow down. I've had boats that went up to 60mph and they didn't chine walk so I'm used to the speed. I'm asking for advice on higher speeds and being able to control the boat and NOT people telling me to slow down, but thank you for your concern. If you have genuine advice on how to control the boat at high speed them please post here, if you're just going to tell me to slow down, please keep your comments to yourself. Thanks, Ray

Ayuh,.... Drivin' through chine-walk is something that's learned, not easily explained...

73mph might be All she'll let you run,...
It depends on the Hull...

Not to be argumentative - but being used to speed is not the same as being used to the boat. I've track raced motorcycles up to 140 mph, but the first few times in my boat doing close to 70 was a huge learning experience. You need to learn to feel the boat, trim, water conditions (chop, current, depth, etc) and how they will affect the handling. This is only done with practice. Since you don't want to hear slow down, I'll just say wear a life jacket and pick an open area of water to learn what trim, weight distribution, and water conditions do to the handling.

73 on the water is plenty fast enough!...Think about it, ANYTHING that happens at that speed may cost you your life! Like a motorcycle at 100+...

Re: Javelin given to me and I have a question

Your trim is your friend at speed ... be prepared to trim the engine down. It will cost you speed, but help you maintain control, and speed without control is just dangerous. You need more practice at slower speeds to understand how the boat will respond at higher speeds. GRADUALLY increase your speed as your confidence increases on the handling of the boat and what trim will do in each situation. You don't just floor it, you work your way up to it ... its a learning curve. Sorry if you don't like the advice, but asking for advice and then chastising the people that don't tell you what you want to hear is a bit counter productive.

Learn with an experienced driver, or alone, and in open water with no other traffic. Don't put others at risk in your desire for speed. And always wear a pfd, especially when pushing the limits of your boat and experience.

That is my advice, take it or leave it, but YOU asked.

Welcome and congrats on the boat. Like others have said, your best bet is to start out a little slower (45-50 mph) and "play" w/ the controls to get a good feel for what changes they make. Once you know how much trim changes the performance in what ways, they you can slowly step your speed up.

I'm curious where you are running these speeds. There isn't much big water in northern Indiana.

Maybe get into boat racing or BUY something thats a bit more designed for that kind of speed other than a little 19 footer I wouldnt want to be anywhere near you while you are testing your skills at 70+ MPH. Dad gives you a pristine boat that he bought and paid for and you try and destroy it the first time out???

Skip the life jacket. At 73MPH, hitting the water will likely kill him anyway. If not, at that speed, the water will rip the jacket off anyway. Invest in cheap term life insurance with double indemnity. Like the man said, slow down until you have a good handle on how the boat behaves at high speed. You already know it is unstable at that speed. That is common sense trying to tell you to back off the throttle a little. Other than that, like they say "trim down". That will force the hull down onto the water.

I had a 19'6" Stratos with a 200 optimax that would walk every time I hit 70 mph. do you have a jack plate? I raised my engine a little (1/4") at a time, and went with a Trophy Plus 4 blade. lost maybe 1 mph but boat was much easier to run. then again, I had a lot of seat time on the boat.

Lake Wawasee, Salamonie Reservoir and Lake Tippecanoe are some lakes that I go to a lot and they are PLENTY big enough to get my boat up to those speeds.

Maybe get into boat racing or BUY something thats a bit more designed for that kind of speed other than a little 19 footer I wouldnt want to be anywhere near you while you are testing your skills at 70+ MPH. Thanks, I don't think I'd wanna be near you anyway. And YES, this boat is in SHOWROOM new condition.I could give a crap less about the boat, my dad was NEVER in my life and this boat means NOTHING to me.......I could go torch it right now and not have any remorse about it. I'm thinking about selling it anyway

There's some advice that I'm looking for. Thank you.

When I made my couple of high speed runs there were NO other boaters out tubing, skiing or just cruising around the lake. I was PLENTY aware of my surroundings and constantly looking ahead and to the side for other possible boaters

No it doesn't have a jack plate on it yet. It currently has a Renegade 4 blade SS prop on it now and I might change back to a 3 blade to give up a little top speed. Yes guys, I realize speed kills but I want to get used to this boat pretty quick and I've been running it at 65-70mph regularly and adjusting the trim to get a feel for the boat.

goodluck with it, hopefully you change your views. enjoy your father while hes around...he wont be forever.
ps, when chine walking, trim down. the boat is traveling beyond its safe means.

Really now? He doesn't talk to me for years at a time and I'm perfectly fine with that. I'm almost 40 years old and I've felt like this for many years. My parents split when I was 5 and dad never came to visit me or even call me. He has to ask me all the time when my birthday is.......a real dad would know when his kids birthday is. My boys were born 9-8-95 at 5:29pm was 21" long 8lbs 14oz and my other son was born 10-31-2005 at 4:59pm and was 20" long and 8lbs 6oz.

Now then, I've watched several videos on Youtube of guys doing over 100mph in bass boats.

Again, not trying to butt in, but having a wife who was estranged from her father, I have a comment. Maybe the boat was his way of reaching out to you. I don't know the dynamics, nor do I have any need to. Just wanted to say it's always possible to forgive, not easy, but possible.

My suggestion is to take it out on a quiet weekday when no one is around. Floor that sucker and trim it out as far as it will go without cavitating, then chine walk the hell out of it. You'll either get used to it or be dead. Figure that's about the advice you're looking for since "slow down and learn the handling of the boat" doesn't float for you.

Don't forget your killswitch and life jacket:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UEETjztLqI

That guy would have been purred fish food if he didn't have a kill switch.
At fast speeds you have less time to react and unlike the road the surface conditions can change greatly. Also the wind tends be more calmer in the early morning and near sunset. Also getting a larger boat with more displacement might be better because a small wave can launch you into the air, where you have no control.

On this forum you are going to find more people who are more cautious than other forums. You would see a lot more "slow down" if you didn't scare a lot of them away with your defensive attitude. Just be as safe as you can. I see your son is 5 years old, just make sure history does not repeat itself by getting yourself killed.

Everyone makes mistakes, they only become dangerous when they are put into situations with very little for margin of error.
